Commercial Loan Officer Southern Michigan Bank & Trust

Summary This position has responsibility for building long‑term relationships with commercial loan customers, business development, and other community activities. The holder is responsible for maintaining the commercial loan portfolio by meeting established lending requirements and all other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities & Skills

Make and service commercial loans

Follow current loans and maintain customer relationships

Present loan requests to the loan committee and the Board

Actively solicit new business prospects; make sales and/or new business calls

Interview applicants to develop information regarding their business, lending needs, earnings, and creditworthiness

Approve or reject loans within lending authority

Operate with moderate lending authority and independence

Maintain communication with the professional community to identify new business prospects

Participate in professional and civic organization activities to promote a high profile for the bank in community and business prospects

Interpret the needs of customers and effectively resolve any problems to ensure complete satisfaction

Strong analytical and accounting skills, applying mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations

Apply common sense understanding to carry out verbal and written instructions and deal with standardized and unique situations

Demonstrate a professional demeanor and proactive team attitude in interactions with all customers (internal and external)

Exhibit excellent customer service skills

Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other software)

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.).

Five or more years of commercial loan and credit analyst experience.

Thorough knowledge of the banking industry.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively compose original correspondence and verbally exchange information with customers and vendors.

Interpersonal Skills This position is required to deal with internal and external customers in a positive, “Quality Customer Service” manner. An open, willing-to-assist approach to work is expected, along with the ability to work beyond normal job duties as required. Interpersonal and problem‑solving skills are required. This position will have access to highly confidential information that must be handled in a professional manner.

Physical Demands While performing the duties, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear; frequently sits, uses hands to finger, handle, or feel; reaches with hands and arms; occasionally stands, walks, climbs, or balances; stops, kneels, crouches, or crawls. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Work Environment The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate/conversational.
