Specialist in Special Care Dentistry The closing date is 15 January 2026

The Special Care and Community Dental Service is seeking to recruit a compassionate and motivated individual working four days per week to join our existing team of highly skilled clinicians and support staff to provide comprehensive dental care to our patients in Carlisle & Eden. The candidate should have a passion for Special Care Dentistry and be keen to make a difference to the vulnerable patients seen by our service. Being able to communicate effectively with both patients and staff is essential as you will be responsible for looking after some of the most vulnerable people in society.

Main duties of the job The post is full time , proposed as 37.5 hours a week though variance could be considered. Base of work is the Carlisle Dental Centre.

This role would suit dentists who wish to contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the oral health of the local population through direct clinical contact and innovative working with our local health and social care partners and patients. The ideal candidate will be experienced at (or working towards) the provision of both inhalation and intravenous sedation to dental patients.

Post holders will be expected to travel to other clinic locations in Carlisle & Eden. Provision of care under general anaesthesia will be a key element of the job and this is provided at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.

Person Specification Qualifications

Bachelor in Dental Surgery or equivalent

Evidence of continued professional and managerial development

NHSE Performer List number with no conditions or restrictions.

Not be subject to an open or on-going Performer Investigation

Registration with General Dental Council (Dentist) with no conditions or restrictions

Registration on GDC Specialist List relevant to post

Dental post-graduate qualification relating to specific clinical skill particularly in sedation

Experience

Experience in pain and anxiety control as appropriate to speciality area including provision of conscious sedation

Provision of comprehensive dental care under GA

Experience of Clinical Audit and evaluation and learning cycle.

Planning and managing care where there are complex medical co-morbidities or the situation requires the involvement of other professionals and/or carers to resolve complex patient management issues

Experience of working in collaboration with other health care teams e.g. hospital staff, health and social care and GDS

Experience of providing healthcare within salaried and specialised services

Experience of teaching, training, supervising and mentoring junior staff, dental core trainees and/or undergraduate dental students

Domiciliary experience relevant to Special Care Dentistry

Membership of relevant professional body

Use of patient management techniques such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

Skills

Organisational and leadership skills: ability to communicate with, support and motivate team

Sound interpersonal skills - tact and diplomacy

Specific knowledge of the NHS Dental Services and rules and regulations.

Knowledge and understanding of NHS England Commissioning Strategies on Special Care.

Knowledge of wider dental agenda

Local, regional and national oral health strategies

Knowledge of patient management techniques such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Personal Circumstances

Current driving licence

Able to work in different clinical settings throughout a working week

Comply with the NHS policy on smoking

Ability to travel between sites in Cumbria

Self-motivated

Standard Check: £21.50 + Administration cost of £5.90 = £27.40. Deducted from salary over a 4 month period or a one-off payment.

Enhanced Check: £49.50 + administration cost of £5.90 = £55.40. Deducted from salary over a 4 month period or a one-off payment.
