The Department offers a defined benefit retirement plan and other competitive benefits. Starting salary for lateral Police Officer II is $110,514, and for POST Certified Police Officer V is $83,280.

Position Summary The Police Officer performs assigned patrol activities and enforces laws during assigned shifts or special assignments to maintain peace and order. Responds to calls for service, initiates contact with reporting parties, gathers and evaluates information, determines priority, and takes appropriate action. Operates assigned police vehicle, radio, phone, and computer, using authorized equipment and weapons as needed. Works under direct supervision of the assigned patrol sergeant.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Receives and responds to calls for service from the communications center or community members.

Initiates contact with reporters, suspects, victims, and witnesses; detains and arrests suspects based on probable cause.

Performs traffic accident investigations and enforcement activities during routine and directed patrol.

Prepares reports, citations, and accident reports, ensuring accuracy and legal sufficiency.

Provides information, advice, and service to the public and other agencies.

Identifies and preserves crime scenes, photographs, and collects evidence.

Provides testimony in court regarding police cases and evidence.

Operates assigned police vehicle under normal and emergency driving circumstances.

Provides advice on crime prevention to business owners and citizens.

Maintains accurate records using a personal computer and required software.

Supports departmental mission, values, and law‑enforcement code of ethics.

Maintains a positive image to build community confidence.

Provides credible testimony; may serve as an emergency worker.

Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications POST Certified Candidates

High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum of 60 contact hours of college‑level coursework with a grade of "C" or higher, or four years of active‑duty U.S. military service with honorable discharge.

Completion of an approved basic law‑enforcement training program and current Colorado POST certification. Out‑of‑state applicants must have a current Colorado POST provisional certification.

Minimum age 21; no record of felony convictions.

Valid driver’s license.

Lateral Candidates

High school diploma or equivalent.

At least three consecutive years of full‑time commissioned police officer service in a patrol level position.

Most recent three years of service evaluations must be satisfactory or above; no record of significant disciplinary actions.

Waiver and release consent for personnel file access by the Chief of Police and designated city employees.

Hiring Process The hiring process typically lasts 6–12 weeks. Applicants who enter the process but are not selected are ineligible to re‑apply for the same position for one year.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Solid knowledge of law‑enforcement principles, criminal law, investigative techniques, and applicable procedures.

Proficiency in arrest techniques, hand‑cuffing, searching, and use of force.

Proficient in computer use, word processing, and relevant software.

Strong communication skills, ability to remain calm under stress, and to exercise restraint.

Knowledge of federal, state, local law, city charter, and department policies.

Physical ability to lift 150–200 pounds, push/pull heavy objects, climb fences, run short distances, stand for long periods, and perform other demanding activities.

Working Environment & Physical Activities

Work involves hazards such as crime, accidents, fires, and disturbances.

Requires frequent exposure to traffic, weather, noise, fumes, and potential bloodborne pathogens.

Expectations include operating vehicles, using firearms, handling evidence, and interacting with the public.
