Summary This position will serve as a Police Officer at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center in Martinsburg WV. The Police Officer will perform a full range of police duties by following and executing rules, regulations, and procedures covering law and rules enforcement; physical and personal security operations; patrol duties; control desk duty; coordination with local courts; and/or crime prevention activities for the local jurisdiction.
Qualifications GS-05 Qualifications
Specialized Experience: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in the federal service that has given the candidate the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Police Officer.
Specialized experience is work that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations – law enforcement operations – practices and techniques – and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property.
Education : Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree in Police Science or a comparable program.
Combination : Successfully completed a Federal-State-County or municipal police academy or comparable training course that included at least 40 classroom hours of instruction in police department procedures and methods, and local law and regulations – to substitute a maximum of 3 months of specialized experience – and possess at least 9 months of specialized experience as identified above.
NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted. Appropriate documentation of completion must be submitted with application materials. Detailed information of experience performed is required (title, duties, dates, hours worked per week).
Military experience may be considered if gained while holding qualifying specialties (list omitted for brevity).
Competencies will be rated on Arrest, Criminal Investigation, First Response, Interpersonal Skills, Public Safety and Security.
Duties
Protect Veterans, volunteers, and others on Departmental property and U.S. officials against threats to personal safety, using force when necessary to enforce laws.
Protect Veterans, employees and visitors sensitive and protected medical information from unauthorized release, per FOIA, HIPAA, etc.
Carries firearms and other weapons; intervenes to deescalate situations; determines appropriate force.
Advises individuals of their rights (Miranda, Weingarten, Garrity, etc.) and protects constitutional and civil rights of persons.
Conducts investigations, apprehensions, or detentions of individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against criminal laws; protects and transports U.S. officials.
Conducts investigations with a nexus to VA prisoner transports, patient search and recovery, life-saving efforts, disaster response and recovery, asset protection during transit, training, and other matters.
Identifies and preserves evidence, writes comprehensive incident reports, prepares case files, and testifies in court.
Provides patrol in vehicles, on foot, and/or on a bicycle.
Detects and intervenes in criminal activity; responds to calls for police assistance.
Investigates incidents and takes steps to mitigate further risk and resolve situations.
Provides emergency response coordination as needed.
Work schedule: 12‑hour rotating Panama shift.
