MAINTENANCE WORKER (CLASS CODE 1720)

Semi-skilled and skilled work in several trades in the maintenance and repair of miscellaneous structures, machinery, and equipment; and related work as required.
Qualifications
Permanent status as a Laborer with the City of New Orleans, OR one year of experience in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, mechanical, building repair work, traffic sign and signal maintenance, refuse collection, or street cleaning.
Preferred: Ability to swim at least 30 feet to the nearest safety ladder for positions at the New Orleans Municipal Yacht Harbor.

Employment Requirements Domicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application. Medical examination: A medical examination is required for all original entrance probationary appointments to active classifications, and may be required for re‑employment, promotions and/or transfers. A medical screening, which may result in a medical examination, is required for all original entrance probationary appointments to non‑active classifications.
Good moral character is required. Any applicant may be disqualified if his/her character or past employment record is found to be unsatisfactory. Forgery, misrepresentation of facts, or cheating on examinations is punishable by disqualification, fine and other penalties.
Licensed drivers should have a current license when required. Veterans preference: on original entrance examinations, veterans, disabled veterans, certain spouses and parents of veterans receive additional credit. Documentation must be provided with the Veterans Preference claim form.
High school diploma and GED: Must be issued by a recognized state Department of Education or institution. Certificates of completion, diplomas from non‑recognized institutions, or foreign high school diplomas are not acceptable.
Accredited colleges and universities: The degree must be from an accredited institution recognized by the USDE. Degrees from foreign institutions are accepted with a statement of educational equivalency from an accepted evaluation service.
Experience: Credit will not be given for unpaid work unless specified. Partial credit for related part-time employment. The Civil Service reserves the right to determine relatedness of degrees, education, or other credentials. Experience credit is granted for related provisional appointments (internal applicants).
