Sworn law enforcement position that involves protecting life and property through enforcement of laws and ordinances. Interact professionally with citizens and respond to calls for service. Work involves responsibility for performing assigned police work of varying difficulty utilizing community oriented/problem solving techniques which include: community engagement, resource development, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, crime prevention, detection and investigation, apprehension of violators, preservation of order, and related police functions. Frequently involves the performance of hazardous and strenuous tasks and the exercise of initiative and judgement in various situations endangering life or property. Position involves shift work and the potential to work weekends and holidays. Lateral and Entry Level Applicants

There are several paths to becoming an Ann Arbor police officer.Police officer job openings will be posted one-to-two times per year. Lateral Applicants – Applicants previously or currently employed by another law enforcement agency with 2 or more years of full time experience. For out-of-state applicants, theMCOLES Recognition of Prior Training must be complete by the time of hire. Entry Level Applicants – Applicants with less than two years of full time prior sworn law enforcement experience, applicants whom have already completed a Michigan police academy, or applicants that are currently enrolled in a Michigan police academy. Applicants must be MCOLES certifiable at the time of hire. If you have not yet completed the police academy, please see our cadet position information.If applications are submitted for entry level police officer and the candidate has not completed the academy or is not currently enrolled in a police academy within the State of Michigan, the application will not be accepted.
