Duties

Utility Systems Repairer‑Operators (USROs) are responsible for assisting in the efficient repair, maintenance and operation of water treatment facilities, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, lift stations, dump stations and ancillary equipment.

Read meters and check monitoring devices, pressure switches, gauges, pumps, motors and troubleshoot and reset switches and breakers.

Assist with the collection and processing of water samples in the operation of a state‑certified lab, performing bacteriological analysis following QA/QC requirements.

Assist in sewage pumping operations, scheduled and emergency water and wastewater system repairs.

Facilities include: 18 water systems, 2 wastewater flumes, 7 lift stations, 30 septic systems, 85 vault toilets, 4 campgrounds with RV dump stations, and 1 industrial waste transfer station.

Physical Effort Work assignments typically require moderately heavy physical effort to lift, carry or otherwise handle items weighing up to 40 pounds. Duties require the incumbent to maneuver into and out of specific locations while dismantling and assembling utility equipment. Repairs may be performed from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are in hard‑to‑reach places. Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching and stooping is typical. Occasionally climbing and working in high places may be required, as well as the use of hoists, holders and pulleys when handling large equipment.

Working Conditions Work is both indoors and outdoors where the incumbent may be subject to prevailing weather conditions. The incumbent may be exposed to biological hazards or diseases while cleaning equipment or shoveling sludge, and hazardous gases such as methane, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide. The incumbent may also be subject to electrical shock, loud noises, acids and hydraulic fluids while working around motors and pumps. Exposure to shock, burns and strains is possible. The incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, hard‑toe shoes, respirators and protective clothing. The incumbent is required to attend safety meetings and training and to review and follow safety regulations and policies prior to using PPE. The incumbent may be required to operate motor vehicles.

Requirements

U.S. citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program participation required.

Government housing may be available.

Uniform will be provided; uniform allowance will be given.

May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work.

May be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally.

Valid driver’s license required; must submit Motor Vehicle Operator's License and driving record. Must submit certified driving records from all states.

Must possess and maintain State of Colorado (or equivalent) Water Treatment Operator Grade D and/or Water Distribution Operator Grade 1 or higher certification.

Age and education: applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 with high‑school diploma or equivalent, vocational training, or school enrollment status as described.

Qualifications To qualify, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job‑related factors:

Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT)

Water Treatment Operator Grade D and/or Water Distribution Operator Grade 1 certification. (SCREEN OUT)

Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc., including blueprints reading.

Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.

Technical practices and use of measuring instruments.
