Overview Underwrites and markets new small business accounts within moderate level of authority for assigned agencies and assists Agency Management Specialists with fully capitalizing on small account production opportunities. Partners effectively with field underwriting staff to identify and develop these opportunities. Provides responsive support and guidance to agents, ensuring all duties comply with legal and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

Responsible for new small business production in the assigned territory. Gather, analyze, and evaluate risk exposure through appropriate documentation. Adopt proactive actions and/or make recommendations to improve risk profitability.

Operate within a specific letter of authority to quote, accept, decline, and modify risks within territorial assignment in accordance with underwriting guidelines. Refer all outside‑authority work to the Small Business Territory Manager or Agency Management Specialist.

Apply knowledge of coverage forms, rating plans, and underwriting guidelines to select and price individual risks. Ensure adequate pricing through proper classification, accurate information, and adherence to company standards.

Answer incoming calls from agents on coverage and billing questions, and adjust policy information based on prescribed authority for new small business submissions on Commercial Property and Casualty lines. Communicate underwriting decisions and appetite effectively.

Collaborate with Agents, Regional Underwriters, AMSs, and other departments to grow a profitable small business book based on agency/territory/team assignments. Actively market products and travel within the assigned territory as needed.

Reinforce the ease of doing business by meeting or exceeding agent expectations and service quality consistently. Communicate openly and timely, driving agent adoption of technology through training efforts in CLAS.

Monitor premium growth for each small business segment using electronic reporting tools. Conduct profit and growth analysis by territory and agency.

Develop and maintain effective relationships with managers, peers, and agents. Communicate progress and share information; assist in training newer underwriters as necessary.

Stay current on industry information, new ideas, products, competitive practice changes, and customer preferences. Advance CxP efforts.

Handle automobile travel within the territory (10‑20% of employee time).

Qualifications Knowledge and Requirements

Proficiency with all supplied desktop tools, including automated underwriting and email systems.

Ability and desire to develop and execute proactive marketing strategies.

Effective communication with agents, applying urgency appropriately.

Build effective relationships with agents, regional underwriting, management, and peers.

Ability to travel and a valid state‑issued driver’s license in good standing.

Education and Experience

College degree preferred.

2‑5 years of underwriting and/or marketing experience required.

Designations of AU, CIC, CPCU preferred.

Total Rewards Selective Insurance offers a competitive base salary, incentive plan eligibility at all levels, and a broad benefits package that includes comprehensive health care plans, a retirement savings plan with company match, discounted Employee Stock Purchase Program, tuition assistance, and 20 days of paid time off. Base salary is geographic‑dependent and ranges from USD $63,000 to USD $87,000 per year. Additional compensation is based on education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
