The Position: The purpose of this position is to protect and serve the city's property and citizens. This is accomplished by patrolling the City, recognizing and citing offenses, and making arrests where necessary. Other duties may include promoting a secure environment, enforcing traffic laws, reporting motor vehicle accidents, investigating crimes, maintaining positive community relations, and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees. The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, but only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities.
Promotes a secure environment by patrolling on car, by foot, and on bike the City and assigned districts, deterring crime by presence, assisting in high-risk situations, providing special surveillance operations, taking reports, operating police equipment, enforcing state and local laws and city ordinances, subduing combative or uncooperative citizens, making lawful arrests, and keeping the peace on civil scenes.
Enforces traffic laws by patrolling roadways, responding to calls from Dispatch Center, observing violations and making traffic stops, searching vehicles, issuing citations or verbal warnings, and filing reports.
Reports on motor vehicle accidents by responding to accidents, clearing the roadway, interviewing involved parties, observing and recording evidence at the scene, interpreting and drawing conclusions from evidence, making an overall assessment of the incident, taking appropriate actions, issuing citations, and filing reports.
Investigates crimes by responding to calls for service, interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects, gathering and documenting evidence, submitting evidence, filing reports, issuing citations, taking suspects into custody, and filing charges through the District Attorney's office.
Maintains positive community relations by answering citizens' questions and providing various civic services and assistance, surveying the public to evaluate problem areas and specific needs, and questioning citizens for their opinions on police matters.
Education and Experience Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Completed at least 45 college credits with a GPA of 2.0 or higher from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting organization recognized by the United States Department of Education or Council for Higher Education,
OR
Completed four (4) years of active-duty military experience with an honorable discharge prior to the entrance examination,
OR
High School diploma or equivalent plus three (3) years of continuous service as a full-time law enforcement officer with a municipality, sheriff's office, or department of public safety.
Credits that have been officially recognized and approved by the Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education will be accepted.

Must possess a current and valid Texas Driver's License.
Must possess a valid TCOLE license.
Must be at least 21 years of age.

In-State Lateral Requirements:
Must possess a valid TCOLE license.
Must possess a current and valid Driver's License.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
No experience and completed at least 45 college credits with a GPA of 2.0 or higher from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting organization recognized by the United States Department of Education or Council for Higher Education,
OR
Completed four (4) years of active-duty military experience with an honorable discharge prior to the entrance examination,
OR
More than three (3) years of experience with a municipality, sheriff's office, or department of public safety with a high school diploma or equivalent.
The Chief of Police or designee will individually assess your experience to determine if you meet the eligibility criteria. Passing all stages of the hiring process is mandatory. Testing is scheduled by appointment. The Chief of Police retains the authority to mandate attendance at a police academy for those chosen.
Those selected to continue will be contacted to schedule the written exam and physical assessment. Testing is conducted by appointment. On test day, bring proper identification (State or Federal Government ID/DL). Gym clothes may be worn for the test.

The entrance examination is a four-part exam: reading comprehension, basic arithmetic, spelling/grammar, and writing skills. A score of 70 or higher in each section is required to pass.

Physical Assessment
The physical assessment measures fitness for duty:
1.5-mile run within 15:26
300-meter run within 62 seconds
26 push-ups (no time limit)
30 sit-ups within 60 seconds
Must pass each element to proceed.
Background Investigation
Extensive check of criminal, driving, employment records, education, and credit references, plus verification of character references.
Interview Board
Interview covering general background, employment, prior police experience, criminal history, traffic record, and military service. Situational reasoning scenarios evaluated. Interview assesses professionalism, dependability, reaction to pressure, situational reasoning, interpersonal and oral communication.
Polygraph Examination
Performed by licensed state examiner; results reviewed regularly. Employment decision remains with Chief of Police.
Psychological Examination
Assessment for suitability: hypersensitivity, impulsiveness, frustration tolerance, achievement, flexibility, sensitivity, maturity, intelligence, somatic concerns, mood, social adjustment, anxiety, emotional control, dominance, moral-ethical behavior, impression formation, attitudes. Must score 4.0 or above to pass.
Physical Examination and Drug Screen
Evaluation of ability to perform job functions (lifting, running, bending, walking). Hearing and eyesight tested.
After passing all phases, an interview with the Chief of Police or designee is scheduled.

Must have been honorably discharged from any military service or provide proof of acceptable re-enlistment eligibility if prior service is uncharacterized.
Must have current and valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Not have been convicted of or received deferred adjudication for any offense of family violence.
Not have been on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above a Class B misdemeanor within ten years.
Not have ever been convicted of an offense above a Class B misdemeanor.
Not have any criminal charges pending or under indictment for any offense.
Must have good moral character.
Must be able to work shift work, holidays, and weekends.
Must be able to read and comprehend training materials, departmental policy, rules, regulations, laws and ordinances.
Must be able to establish effective working relationships with other employees, law enforcement agencies, and the public.
Must be able to learn the use and care of firearms and specialized equipment.
Must possess 20/20 vision, either corrected or uncorrected, unless corrected by contact lenses worn on duty.
