Senior Mechanical Engineer (West Coast Healthcare, San Francisco / Los Angeles / Oakland) Arup is known for designing innovative and sustainable solutions for our clients throughout the United States, and sometimes globally. You will work on projects within the Healthcare industry and beyond, delivering cutting‑edge systems that support decarbonization, sustainability, resiliency and critical care.
The Opportunity
Lead mechanical engineering designs and provide multidisciplinary design leadership on projects.
Design mechanical systems including complete airside systems, heating and cooling hydronic plant systems, specialty exhaust systems, and steam systems.
Work in collaboration with stakeholders and code officials such as HCAi to deliver integrated projects through construction.
Coordinate with multiple disciplines and project managers to deliver comprehensive, coordinated design deliverables.
Assist, supervise or mentor team members and deliver timely feedback and recognition.
Maintain strong client relations related to project delivery and repeat business.
Prepare drawings, specifications, technical reports and presentation materials, incorporating sustainable design methods in buildings.
Present technical material in traditional and innovative ways for review by technical and non‑technical audiences.
Participate in local professional associations.
Be responsible for quality standards, commercial metrics, and client relations for projects.
Is this role right for you?
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or architectural engineering.
8 or more years of professional experience designing and building HVAC systems, including airside and hydronic system components, and experience working on hospital projects.
AutoCAD and Revit MEP proficiency.
Familiarity with codes and standards, specifically CMC, OSHPD, IECC/ASHRAE 90.1, FGI/ASHRAE 170, LEED energy efficiency and indoor quality and NFPA.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for team‑based work.
Presentation skills with colleagues and clients of all levels and commercial/financial awareness.
The ability to prioritize effectively, balance assigned work and maintain exceptional organization skills required for a constantly evolving environment.
Preferred Skills
Professional Engineering License in the U.S.
LEED Accreditation or WELL Certification.
Engineering analysis and energy modeling experience, including whole‑building energy analysis, façade thermal analysis, and airflow modeling.

San Francisco Hiring Range The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in San Francisco is $129,100 to $146,700 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of San Francisco will differ.
