Job Description CDM Smith is looking for a community engagement expert to improve public health through infrastructure projects. The role is based in New Orleans and will leverage cross‑disciplinary strategic communications to lead community outreach for municipal drinking water projects.
Responsibilities
Lead large communication teams to ensure execution of engagement tasks.
Facilitate discussions, create coordination plans, and promote organizational management.
Design and implement communication plans to provide stakeholders with timely decisions.
Write and edit documents to specific reading levels while meeting brand and style guidance.
Translate highly technical information into visual stories that aid public decision‑making.
Perform quality control and readability reviews with high detail.
Manage and mentor junior staff on project communications.
Teach technical staff best practices in communication.
Interact with the public, especially disadvantaged communities, through virtual and on‑ground forums.
Facilitate community engagement forums such as public meetings, hearings, and listening sessions.
Analyze social media and electronic survey data efficiently.
Create forums to brainstorm and act on ideas to improve communication best practices.
Contribute to proposals to win more work, including writing public‑engagement scope, building up a team, and estimating cost.
Attend project public engagement events as required, including some weekend and evening hours.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
7 years of related experience.
Domestic and/or international travel may be required.
Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading community outreach and engagement for diverse communities.
Internal and public meeting facilitation training and experience; experience with controversial situations is a plus.
Experience writing and producing content for varied audiences at low reading grade levels.
Experience with graphic design.
Ability to speak Spanish or Vietnamese is a plus.
Skills and Abilities
Strong organization skills; ability to manage a project team, scope, schedule, and budget.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to see the big picture, then connect disparate dots of activities to meet an end goal.
Ability to build internal and external relationships.
Ability to translate highly complex technical information into content the general public can understand.
Ability to adapt to quickly changing technologies.
Confident working in a virtual team atmosphere.
Strong facilitation skills.
