Senior NDT Inspector (Structural Steel) Location: Various Port Authority facilities (NY/NJ region) – field and shop environments.

Hourly Rate: $32-38/hour.

Position Summary The Senior NDT Inspector is responsible for performing and documenting structural steel inspection and nondestructive testing (NDT) in support of Port Authority projects, including bridges, buildings, and related facilities. The role ensures that fabricated and erected structural steel meets applicable codes, project specifications, and Port Authority quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Perform structural steel inspection and NDT (UT, MT, PT) on shop-fabricated and field-erected members, welds, and bolted connections.

Interpret drawings, specifications, welding procedures, and acceptance criteria for structural steel work.

Prepare NDT procedures and inspection plans in accordance with ASNT SNT-TC-1A and project requirements.

Conduct ultrasonic testing (UT) of welds and base metal for detection and sizing of discontinuities.

Perform magnetic particle testing (MT) and liquid penetrant testing (PT) for surface and near-surface defect detection.

Verify compliance of welds, bolts, base metal, and details with AISC, AWS, ICC, and project specifications.

Document inspection and test results with clear, traceable records (reports, logs, photographs) suitable for Port Authority review.

Coordinate daily with the Prime Firm’s Project Manager and Port Authority staff regarding access, sequencing, and reporting.

Support task-order work planning, including estimating level of effort, establishing inspection hours, and prioritizing tasks.

Participate in safety meetings and comply with all site-specific safety plans, including work at heights, confined spaces, and hazardous environments.

Mentor junior inspectors/technicians and support continuous improvement of QA/QC practices.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.

Minimum five (5) years of demonstrated experience performing structural steel inspection and NDT services comparable to the tasks described in the Scope of Services.

Current ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level II certifications in: Ultrasonic Testing (UT) – certified by an ASNT Level III in UT

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) – certified by an ASNT Level III in MT

Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) – certified by an ASNT Level III in PT

Demonstrated experience on at least ten (10) structural steel inspection and NDT projects within the last three (3) years (bridges, buildings, transportation or similar heavy infrastructure preferred).

Lead Welding & Structural Steel Inspector Location: Various Port Authority facilities (NY/NJ region) – field and shop environments.

Hourly Rate: $35-42/hour.

Position Summary The Lead Welding & Structural Steel Inspector is responsible for oversight and execution of welding and structural steel inspection activities for Port Authority projects. This position focuses on code-compliant review of welding, bolting, materials, and fabrication/erection practices, and works in close coordination with the NDT team to deliver fully compliant inspection services.

Key Responsibilities

Perform visual inspection (VT) of welds, bolted connections, base metals, and fit-up on structural steel members.

Verify compliance of welding procedures, welder qualifications, and bolting practices with applicable codes and project specifications.

Review and interpret structural drawings, welding procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder performance qualification records (WPQR).

Coordinate with the Senior NDT Inspector to integrate VT, UT, MT, and PT inspection activities into an efficient field program.

Confirm that materials (steel shapes, plates, bolts, weld filler metals, coatings interfaces) conform to project submittals and specifications.

Monitor fabrication and erection processes in shops and in the field, documenting nonconformances and corrective actions.

Prepare daily inspection reports, nonconformance reports (NCRs), punch lists, and closeout documentation per Port Authority requirements.

Interface with fabricators, erectors, general contractors, and Port Authority representatives to resolve inspection issues.

Support preparation of inspection plans, checklists, and QA/QC procedures for task orders.

Provide technical guidance to junior inspectors and support field training in visual welding and bolting inspection practices.

Ensure compliance with all site-specific and company safety requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Materials Engineering, or related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.

Minimum five (5) years of demonstrated experience performing structural steel and welding inspection services comparable to the tasks described in the Scope of Services.

Current certifications: AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)

ICC Structural Steel and Bolting Inspector (or Certified Structural Steel and Bolting Inspector per ICC program)

Demonstrated experience on at least ten (10) structural steel projects within the last three (3) years (e.g., bridges, buildings, transportation facilities, or similar heavy infrastructure).
