Job Purpose: A Class A yard hostler job involves moving trailers and containers within a confined area like a distribution center or railyard using a yard truck or hostler. Responsibilities include positioning trailers for loading/unloading, performing pre- and post-trip inspections, and maintaining a clean and organized yard, often requiring a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for roles that may involve street use.

Key responsibilities:

Move trailers:

Safely and efficiently move trailers between loading docks, parking areas, and staging zones.

Move straight trucks:

Move and position straight trucks in and out of loading docks, parking areas, and staging zones.

Trailer Verification:

Assure the trailer numbers are verified with accuracy.

Fueling Vehicles:

Using assigned fuel stations to fuel vehicles as needed.

Driver Vehicle Inspection Report –

Filled out with accuracy and turned in timely.

> Driver Logs –

Filled out with accuracy and submitted timely. Inspect equipment:

Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections on yard tractors and trailers, reporting any damage or maintenance needs.

Coordinate movements:

Communicate with warehouse and logistics staff to ensure trailers are in the correct place for loading and unloading schedules.

Maintain yard:

Keep the yard clean, organized, and safe. This includes chocking trailers when parked.

Operate equipment:

Use a yard tractor and other equipment like pallet jacks to move and store goods.

Follow safety protocols:

Adhere to all safety procedures, which may include wearing proper protective gear.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Organizational Relationships: Has frequent contact and communicates with all levels of staff, customers, and vendors.

Qualification & Experience Guidelines:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Must have the ability to read, write, speak English, and perform simple mathematical calculations with general mental abilities to handle receipts, read maps, road signs, maintain logs, etc.

Must possess a valid commercial driver's license with doubles, triples, and tanker endorsements. Hazmat Preferred.

Must have an acceptable motor vehicle record.

Must have 24 months previous tractor-trailer driving experience and/or be a graduate of a State Certified, Licensed and Safety Department approved driving school.

Must have the ability to properly operate handheld minicomputer when required.

Must have good oral communications skills.

Must be able to follow instructions and take directions via two-way radio or by phone.

Must have working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems.

Must have knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection and maintenance and transportation of hazardous materials.

Must have availability for around-the-clock trips to accommodate freight movements and must be able to be away from home for extended periods of time.

Must meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Must satisfactorily pass a drug test.

Must satisfactorily pass and alcohol test (if applicable),

Must satisfactorily pass the orientation/training program instructions by a Total Transportation & Distribution qualified driver trainer.

Must be at least 23 years old.

Must have working knowledge of safe and efficient lifting and transporting procedures.

Must have working knowledge of procedures surrounding all aspects of freight transportation.

Must have knowledge of different loading techniques such as loading tight and cross loading.

Familiarity with, and in some cases ability, to complete the various forms utilized in freight movement such as shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage movement reports, and exception forms.

Ability to utilize the dockyard management system permitting consistent monitoring of shipment locations as freight moves through the various terminals

Previous experience operating yard equipment is beneficial.

Physical ability: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds is sometimes required.

Bi-lingual Spanish a plus

Strong communication, teamwork, and a clean driving record are essential. Basic computer skills may also be needed for certain software

This position is fully onsite at our Rancho Cucamonga, CA location and has a pay range of $26.00-$28.00 per hour . Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and/or training.
