Job Description Montgomery College is seeking to fill two (2) full‑time HVAC Mechanic II positions at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. Work hours vary: Position 1 – Tuesday‑Saturday, 6:30 am‑3:00 pm; Position 2 – Tuesday‑Saturday, 2:30 pm‑11:00 pm. Under supervision, incumbents perform skilled HVAC work including installation, operation, modification, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and retrofitting. Both positions are grade 23, bargaining, non‑exempt.

Contacts and interaction vary and may involve multiple constituencies such as faculty, colleagues, managers, directors, students, vendors, contractors and consultants.

Duties

Maintain, install and repair commercial heating and air‑conditioning systems, controls, and related subsystems.

Diagnose and troubleshoot air distribution, air balancing, stratification, building insulation and vapor deficiencies.

Repair or replace failed sensors, transmitters, and transducers for control systems.

Repair, retrofit or install new direct digital control (DDC) hardware.

Adjust boilers, chillers, air handling units, motor controls, and refrigerant systems from interface panels or BAS.

Install, maintain, and retrofit new electro‑mechanical relay logic control circuits, pneumatic logic controls, damper or valve actuators, and/or variable frequency drives.

Perform program maintenance work and routine checkups to ensure DDC operates as commissioned, including backups and database server maintenance.

Monitor and inspect construction and contract work for compliance with agreements and code requirements.

Maintain records of work performed and parts/materials used.

Maintain equipment operation logs (temperature, pressures, volts, amps, combustion efficiency, safety inspections, refrigerant records).

Maintain records of equipment failures and repairs.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High School diploma or GED required. Five years of experience in heating, cooling and ventilation systems.

Equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience may be considered.

Comprehensive knowledge of design, maintenance, repair and use of DDC and HVAC systems, chiller operations and related software.

Comprehensive knowledge of building and building systems operation and maintenance (heat, ventilation, AC, electrical, plumbing, energy).

Comprehensive knowledge of HVAC trade methods, procedures and techniques.

Working knowledge of occupational hazards and ability to use tools and equipment safely.

Working knowledge of building and fire codes related to HVAC work.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, control diagrams, HVAC equipment and electrical schematic control wiring diagrams.

Ability to understand material and supply requirements.

Ability to read, understand and follow written, verbal, and visual instructions.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing.

Ability to instruct and train lower-level employees.

Ability to work cooperatively with others.

Basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), the Internet and Windows applications.

Licenses and Certifications

Maryland Journeyman level HVAC license.

EPA Universal 608 certification.

Valid driver’s license.

Application Process

Hiring Range: $26.19 – $34.04 per hour (maximum $41.89). Initial placement based on experience and internal equity.
