The Heavy Equipment Mechanic – Field Service is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining AWR’s heavy equipment fleet in the field and in the shop. This role ensures equipment is repaired safely, efficiently, and correctly, supports uptime for operations, and communicates progress and needs clearly to leadership. The mechanic operates a service truck, travels to job sites as needed, and uses OEM diagnostic software to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues. Key Responsibilities
Diagnose, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on heavy equipment (including loaders, excavators, grinders, and support equipment). Operate a service truck and travel to AWR sites and job locations to complete field repairs. Inspect equipment to identify additional issues; recommend corrective actions and needed parts. Read and interpret equipment manuals, lubrication charts, parts diagrams, and electrical/hydraulic schematics. Use OEM diagnostic software and follow diagnostic troubleshooting trees to identify root causes. Document work and updates using maintenance management software (AMCS) and communicate job status to the supervisor. Follow AWR safety rules, SOPs, and regulatory/manufacturer requirements. Always wear PPE (safety toe boots/shoes, vest, hard hat, gloves). Report all accidents, injuries, and near‑misses immediately, regardless of severity. Maintain company property, service truck condition, and work area cleanliness. Other duties as assigned. Essential Requirements
5+ years of verifiable heavy equipment mechanic experience (field and/or shop). Experience troubleshooting and repairing engines, transmissions, hydraulics, brakes, and suspensions. Experience with equipment/engines such as Caterpillar, John Deere, Cummins, Mack (or comparable combinations). Ability to use OEM diagnostic software (John Deere, CAT, Cummins). Able to use software for diagnostics, A‑plus for JPro, PTT, Davey, and Snap‑On scanner. Strong computer skills; ability to use maintenance management software (AMCS). Strong electrical knowledge is a plus. Advanced mechanical skills are required and expected. Rebuild skills are a plus. Must have own tools. Valid driver’s license and clear driving record required. Willingness to work in both field and shop environments, on any fleet equipment as assigned. Willingness to work overtime (normal schedule requires OT) and provide Saturday emergency coverage as needed. Willingness to travel and occasionally stay overnight out of town. Preferred Requirements
Strong electrical diagnostic knowledge. Welding ability. ASE and/or DOT certifications. Bilingual (Spanish/English). Professional Competencies and Skills
Must be able to work in a sometimes noisy or dusty indoor and outdoor environment. Must be adaptable to changing job demands based on workload and equipment needs. Must have strong communication skills and provide clear updates on repair progress. Must be able to work flexible hours and sometimes weekends. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Benefits
