Location: Norfolk, VA
Purpose:
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a Sr. Crane Mechanic to oversee maintenance on our fleet of cranes, including Fiji and Gurdeson cranes, in support of general shipyard operations.
Job Description
Apply electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical theory and knowledge to test and modify crane machinery.
Complete overhaul and repair of crane machinery and components.
Operate crane machinery for testing, inspection, diagnosis, and troubleshooting.
Perform routine and preventative maintenance.
Assist with annual third‑party inspection of crane machinery and components.
Replace, rework, or refinish worn and/or damaged parts according to specifications and guidelines.
Use diagnostic, test, and measuring tools and equipment to examine and evaluate crane machinery and components.
Disassemble and reassemble equipment using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools.
Test crane machinery and components after repair or modification to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturer’s specifications.
Coordinate overseas technical representatives and diagnostic support from manufacturers.
Read, understand, and interpret blueprints, operation manuals, parts manuals, and technical drawings.
Complete service reports and other paperwork as assigned.
Comply with procedures, rules, and regulations to maintain a safe and clean working environment.
Apply basic math, reading, and communication skills.
Control cost in assigned area of responsibility.
Understand and act upon instructions or work independently to complete responsibilities.
Maintain regular, reliable attendance.
Other duties may be assigned as workload dictates.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
At least 9 years of experience in maintaining and repairing heavy electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic equipment with a 2‑year degree or equivalent training, or 12 years of experience and at least 4 years of supervisory experience.
Expert knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
Ability to interpret technical drawings (mechanical and electrohydraulic).
Expert knowledge of hand tools and instruments associated with the trade.
Proficiency with computers, Microsoft 365, and AutoCAD.
Clean driving record.
Ability to work effectively with others.
Steady, reliable worker.
Desired Qualifications
Previous maritime or shipyard experience.
Experience with Fiji and Gurdeson cranes.
Ability to obtain DBIDS.
Security Requirements
U.S. citizenship required.
Travel Requirements
Minimal travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes; minimum 20 lbs.
Physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships; ability to climb ladders, work in extreme temperatures, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces.
May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
Ability to perform work in high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions.
Frequent exposure to noise from machinery and equipment.
Operate trucks, forklifts, and man‑lifts.
Required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, talk, hear, reach, climb, balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist, and crawl as needed.
Work in extreme temperatures and conditions with limited ventilation.
Frequent use of respirator.
Wear protective clothing, face shields, and goggles when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
