PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: $125,000 - $135,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

This is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US (US citizenship, Green Card or work authorisation).

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE BBC Monitoring delivers trusted news and analysis from open-source media. We are seeking a Commercial and Business Development Manager to join our Washington office, reporting directly to the Head of Business Development in London. In this role, you will shape and execute BBC Monitoring’s commercial growth strategy in the U.S. market, driving expansion of our subscription-based service across diverse customer segments, including governments, intergovernmental organizations, academia, and corporates.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM Joining BBC Monitoring as Business Development Manager in Washington DC offers a unique opportunity to shape our commercial growth strategy in the USA. Reporting to the Head of Business Development in London, you’ll work closely with colleagues across BBC Monitoring and collaborate with BBC World Service senior management in the region. As our sole representative in Washington, you’ll enjoy autonomy and responsibility to drive commercial growth, and the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a globally respected organisation.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

Work with the Head of Business Development to design and implement a commercial growth strategy in the US.

Identify and secure new subscribers and commercial customers for BBC Monitoring’s services and projects.

Implement pricing policies, maintain information systems, and report on performance against targets.

Monitor market changes, assess competitor activity, and recommend actions to strengthen BBC Monitoring’s position.

Collaborate closely with the London Business Development team, Editorial, and Innovations teams.

Lead contract negotiations with BBC lawyers to establish long‑term commercial relationships while safeguarding BBC values.

Represent BBC Monitoring in key forums, build strong regional partnerships, and travel extensively across the US.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

5–8 years’ proven experience in commercial sales, deal‑making, and business development, with strong negotiating skills.

Demonstrated ability to work in creative environments, influence production staff, and understand their needs and motivations.

Solid knowledge of contractual, copyright, and rights valuation matters, with experience applying policy frameworks such as BBC Fair Trading.

Strong capability to pitch content confidently, supported by knowledge of the international media monitoring industry.

A clear understanding of US commercial opportunities to grow BBC Monitoring’s subscription service, alongside developing expertise in BBC Monitoring output.

DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
