Position Summary The athletic program at Appalachian State University operates on the premise that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the institution’s overall program of education. Priority is given to high standards of both academic and athletic quality – the goal being the complete development of the student‑athlete.
The assistant field hockey coach instructs the field hockey team on assigned fundamentals and skills necessary for a successful program. This position works within the Department of Athletics and corresponds with parents, recruits, visiting teams, and community members.
Minimum Qualifications
Completed bachelor’s degree (acquired before start date) from an appropriately accredited institution
Playing experience at the collegiate and/or international level
Strong leadership, enthusiasm, and teaching abilities
Dedication to the mission of Appalachian Athletics and the University as a whole
Strong emphasis on academic success for student‑athletes, and the facilitation of improvement of individual student‑athlete’s skills, fitness, and mentality
Understanding of the role of athletics within the university experience
License / Certification Required None specified.
Preferred Qualifications None specified.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Practice and game planning and implementation
On‑field coaching
Video analysis
Recruiting quality student athletes
Alumni correspondence
Fundraising
Travel planning
Assisting the head coach in routine administrative tasks
Assisting the head coach with all day‑to‑day operations
Type of Position Full Time ; Staff/Non‑Faculty; VISA Sponsorship: Not available; Eligible to work and live in the U.S.
Work Schedule / Hours Varies according to team matches, practices, and recruiting. 40+ hours per week, 12 months per year. No staff required.
Salary Commensurate with experience.
Physical Demands Typical physical demands of a coaching position within a collegiate setting. All duties are to be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
