Summary: President & CEO – Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia (IIAV)

The President & CEO serves as the chief executive officer of the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia (IIAV) and its related corporate entities. Operating under the direction of the Board of Directors, this leader is responsible for executing the association’s mission, overseeing staff, ensuring operational excellence, and advancing the interests of independent insurance agents across the state.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Serve as the primary staff officer and executive advisor to the Board of Directors.
  • Implement board directives, maintain compliance with bylaws, and ensure all organizational activities align with mission, strategy, and nonprofit legal requirements.
  • Provide leadership to volunteers, committees, and subsidiary organizations including VFSC (for-profit), VAIA (education-focused nonprofit), and VAPAC (political action committee).

Organizational & Administrative Management

  • Hire, train, lead, and evaluate staff; maintain organizational structure and job descriptions.
  • Develop and manage budgets, finances, assets, and facilities.
  • Oversee contracts, vendor relationships, and professional services (legal, accounting, consulting).
  • Ensure modern, efficient administrative operations supported by current technology solutions.

Technology, Innovation & AI Readiness

  • Lead the association’s digital transformation and modernization efforts.
  • Monitor emerging technologies—including AI, automation, data analytics, and Insurtech—and assess their impact on members.
  • Develop resources and initiatives that help agencies adopt new technologies and remain competitive.
  • Promote digital literacy and innovation among staff and membership.

Member Relations & Engagement

  • Foster strong relationships with member agencies, industry partners, and insurance carriers.
  • Oversee membership recruitment, retention, and satisfaction strategies.
  • Ensure timely responses to member inquiries and deliver relevant programs, research, and support.
  • Represent the association at industry events and serve as a visible, accessible leader.

Government Affairs & Advocacy

  • Serve as IIAV’s chief lobbyist and represent the association before the Virginia General Assembly and regulatory bodies.
  • Maintain strong relationships with legislators and regulatory agencies.
  • Direct legislative strategy, research, grassroots efforts, and political action initiatives.
  • Coordinate major advocacy events including Insurance Day on the Hill at the Virginia State Capitol and national legislative programs.

Education & Professional Development

  • Oversee education and training programs delivered through VAIA, including pre-licensing, continuing education, and professional development.
  • Ensure the membership receives high-quality, relevant technical and managerial training.

Marketing, Communications & Public Relations

  • Direct marketing strategies for membership, products, and services.
  • Serve as editor and contributor for all association publications.
  • Ensure consistent, effective internal and external communications.
  • Act as spokesperson for the association with media and external organizations.

Events & Meetings

  • Oversee planning and execution of all major IIAV events including annual conferences, conventions, and legislative meetings.
  • Ensure committees receive proper staff support and documentation.

In Summary

The President & CEO of IIAV is a visionary association executive who manages operations, leads staff, advances legislative priorities, oversees education and member services, embraces innovation and AI, and represents Virginia’s independent insurance agents at the state level and supports national legislative efforts in conjunction with the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America. This role requires strong leadership, advocacy expertise, business acumen, and the ability to guide the association through ongoing technological and industry transformation.
