Hearth is a non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of homelessness among the elderly. This mission is accomplished through a unique blend of prevention, placement, and housing programs all designed to help elders find and succeed in homes of their own. To this end, all housing operated by Hearth provides a creative array of supportive services that assist residents to age with dignity, regardless of their special medical, mental health, or social needs. Position Overview Hearth is seeking a dynamic and strategic Volunteer Manager to lead the rebuilding and revitalization of our volunteer program. This role will be responsible for designing, implementing, and sustaining a robust volunteer infrastructure that engages community members, and supports organizational goals. The ideal candidate is both visionary and detail-oriented, with experience in volunteer management, program development, community engagement, and the effective use of social media.

Key Responsibilities

Assess the current state of the volunteer program and identify areas for improvement.

Design and implement a comprehensive volunteer program aligned with organizational mission and goals.

Establish clear policies, procedures, and best practices for volunteer engagement.

Recruitment & Onboarding

Develop creative strategies to recruit diverse volunteers from the community.

Create onboarding processes, orientation materials, and training sessions to prepare volunteers for success.

In collaboration with the Community Engagement Manager, build partnerships with schools, businesses, and community organizations to expand recruitment pipelines.

Foster a positive volunteer culture through recognition, appreciation, and ongoing support.

Organize events, workshops, and appreciation initiatives to strengthen volunteer commitment.

Social Media and Digital Outreach

Capture the volunteer experience across the Hearth portfolio (seven sites in and around Boston).

In conjunction with the Development Team, prepare and schedule engaging stories, utilize photos, graphics, and short videos that highlight volunteer and resident/client engagement.

Supervision & Support

Provide guidance, mentorship, and supervision to volunteers across various roles.

Match volunteers’ skills and interests with organizational needs.

Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteer-related inquiries and concerns.

Data & Evaluation

Track volunteer participation, hours, and impact using appropriate systems.

Prepare reports to demonstrate program outcomes and inform decision‑making.

Use data to refine strategies and ensure program sustainability.

Work closely with program staff at all Hearth sites to integrate volunteers into site programming.

Communicate program goals, successes, and needs to stakeholders.

Represent the organization at community events and networking opportunities.

Qualifications and Desired Skills/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, social work, human resources, or related field (or equivalent experience).

Minimum 3–5 years of experience in volunteer management or program development.

Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to build relationships with diverse groups of people.

Experience with either Blackbaud NXT or the ability to learn, experience using a volunteer management software and data tracking systems.

Experience and proficiency using multiple social media platforms and scheduling tools such as Hootsuite or Buffer.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Creative problem‑solving abilities and a passion for community engagement.

Office Location:

Hearth Anna Bissonnette House (ABH) 1640 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02118 (please note this position requires traveling to the seven Hearth sites in Boston and Brookline. Must have reliable personal transportation.

Hybrid:

After 90 days non‑direct client care roles at Hearth may be eligible for up to two days remote a week with the approval of their supervisor and the needs of the organization.

Compensation:

$65,000-$75,000

Pay Transparency:

The above reflects the anticipated annual salary range for this position if hired to work in Massachusetts. The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.
