Reporting to the Manager of Facilities Services, the HVAC Mechanic is responsible for preventive maintenance, repair, and modification of building systems and equipment, including HVAC, refrigeration, motors, compressors, and pneumatic systems.

Responsibilities

Respond to service calls from hospital departments and Facility Engineering staff related to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

Perform preventive maintenance, tests, and inspections of HVAC systems using measurement devices and energy management control systems.

Troubleshoot equipment, diagnose malfunctions, obtain materials and tools, and perform required repairs.

Provide training and support to Facility Engineering staff, physicians, and other hospital team members on equipment use and safety.

Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, service requests, and material usage.

Ensure work complies with code, accreditation regulations, and departmental safety procedures.

Assist with project reviews, proposals, and construction coordination, ensuring contractors are licensed, bonded, and current with operational manuals.

Participate in department meetings, in-service training, and documentation updates.

Maintain a clean, organized work area and properly care for tools and equipment.

Qualifications and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; preferred coursework in HVAC or related area.

Three to five years of on-the-job experience in a large, complex commercial or institutional building.

Current Certified Facility Concepts (CFC) certification; obtainable within two years of hire.

Mechanical proficiency with hand and power tools and able to repair a variety of hospital equipment.

Computer skills for programming changes in energy management control systems.

Blueprint reading, shop mathematics, and ability to interpret data from manuals and plans.

Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve equipment issues.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with hospital personnel and the public.

Organizational Requirements

Attend and participate in department meetings.

Complete mandatory education, annual competencies, and department‑specific education within established timeframes.

Maintain current certification and licensing in good standing throughout the fiscal year.

Adhere to universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques.

Comply with regulatory agency requirements, survey process, and internal policies.

Be available for overtime and additional shifts when required.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

May be exposed to fumes, extreme temperatures, dust, noise, and hazards such as electrical shock or gases.

Requires the physical ability and stamina to lift, work on ladders and steps, walk, stand for prolonged periods, and perform the essential functions of the position.

Full‑time, Mid‑Senior level. Remote location: South Bend, IN. Salary range: $80,000.00 – $100,000.00.
