Essential Job Duties A Challenge Course Apprentice is enthusiastic about gaining valuable leadership, collaboration, and facilitation skills. In this role, you will gain the technical and soft skills needed to become a certified facilitator and prepare for more advanced positions within our team. You must attend 40 hours of initial comprehensive training focused on developing high-course technical skills, debriefing strategies, and a deep understanding of safety protocols to learn how to facilitate team-building games and activities. Adherence to Standards:

Strictly follow all procedures established by Wellness and Recreation and the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) for the safe operation of all elements. Rigging and Belay Management:

Learn and execute proper rigging techniques. Practice and demonstrate proficiency in all required knots, belay systems, and technical rope work. Program Support:

Co-facilitate team-building and leadership programs for various clients, including university students, campus staff, and external groups. Instruction:

Clearly and enthusiastically deliver safety orientations, proper harnessing procedures, and technical instructions for ascending and descending high and low elements as part of our risk management procedures. Customer Service:

Welcome and greet users, providing information on facilities, programs, services, and the local area. Facilitation Support:

Assist in setting up and breaking down high-course, low-course, and team-building activities for groups. Educate students, faculty, and the community about outdoor recreation and our programs. Group Processing:

Learn and practice facilitation techniques, including leading introductory activities, debriefing exercises, and managing group dynamics to achieve client learning outcomes. Equipment Maintenance:

Ensure all gear is properly cleaned, dried, inventoried, and stored after use to maintain its serviceability and longevity.

Environment:

Both indoors and outdoors with potential exposure to adverse weather. Physical:

Frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting weight up to 40 lbs regularly. Must be comfortable and capable of working at height (over 30 feet) for route-setting, maintenance, and rescue procedures. Sensory:

Potentially loud and busy work environment that requires strong communication and observation skills. Schedule:

Flexibility in availability is needed to potentially work early mornings, late nights, weekends, and breaks. Safety:

Exposure to potential safety hazards and adherence to the emergency action plan to mitigate risk.

Required License or Certification

Eligibility:

Current full-time NC State student, demonstrated by enrollment in at least 12 undergraduate or 9 graduate credit hours. Certifications:

First Aid and Adult CPR/AED certifications should be current or obtained before position commencement. Time Commitment:

This position requires you to work a minimum of four challenge courses and teambuilding programs per semester.
