Full-Time Zoning Inspector – City of Tallmadge, Ohio The City of Tallmadge, Ohio is seeking a dedicated professional to serve as a Full-Time Zoning Inspector. This position is responsible for interpreting and enforcing compliance with City regulations across both administrative and field settings.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Under direction, the Zoning Inspector interprets and enforces compliance with City regulations regarding zoning, signs, property maintenance, stormwater management, and illicit discharge/soil erosion control, while assisting with codes pertaining to nuisance, litter, and other related enforcement issues. Work is performed in a combined office and field environment, with the majority of duties dedicated to field inspection and enforcement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION Enforcement & Field Operations:

Conducts routine field inspections of residential and commercial properties to ensure compliance with approved plans and City Zoning Ordinances.

Monitors construction sites for compliance with stormwater management and soil erosion control regulations.

Conducts investigations of reported violations; identifies, photographs, records, and processes violations.

Takes appropriate enforcement action (e.g., citations, stop-work orders) that must withstand legal scrutiny.

Utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and permitting software to accurately track, map, and document enforcement cases.

Administrative & Planning Review:

Reviews and approves zoning applications and plans to ensure strict adherence to City Zoning Ordinances.

Reviews stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPPs) and best management practices (BMPs).

Prepares and maintains inspection reports, detailed, and legally defensible records.

Assists the police and service departments in responding to inquiries and complaints regarding code enforcement.

Provides information and educational materials to the public regarding City codes and necessary compliance steps.

Effectively coordinates technical requirements and enforcement strategies with various City departments and external agencies.

Legal & Professional Support:

Prepares documentation and works with the law department for enforcement and abatement.

Serves as witness for the law department in court.

Attends meetings, seminars, and workshops, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS Required Experience & Education: Education: Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED). Experience: Six (6) months recent documented public contact work experience involving enforcement of laws and regulations of construction trades, building or business regulations, planning, land use, safety, or related activities; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Required Licenses & Certifications (Must possess or obtain within 18 months of hire): Valid State of Ohio Driver’s License (must remain insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance policy). International Code Council (ICC) Zoning Inspector or Property Maintenance Inspector certification. Ohio EPA Construction Site SWPPP/MS4 Certification (or equivalent). National Management Incident Management System (NIMS) 100. Ohio Ethics Training, Ohio Sunshine Law Training, and Drug-free workplace training. Preferred Experience/Education: Possessing an associate’s degree in planning, public administration, or a related field, or certification as an ICC Zoning Inspector (or equivalent).
