Position Summary
The Freight Broker builds and manages a personal book of business by connecting shippers and carriers to move freight efficiently and profitably. This is a full‑desk role responsible for developing new shipper accounts through cold calling and networking while simultaneously managing carrier relationships to ensure reliable service and margin growth. The ideal candidate thrives in a competitive, fast‑paced environment and is motivated by building lasting partnerships through communication, hustle, and accountability.
Key Responsibilities
Prospect, qualify, and secure new shipper accounts through high‑volume cold calling, email outreach, and networking.
Negotiate buy and sell rates to maximize margin while ensuring competitive pricing and service quality.
Match available freight with qualified carriers to ensure timely and efficient execution.
Develop and maintain relationships with core carriers to support consistent capacity and lane coverage.
Use DAT and other digital load boards to post, search, and track freight opportunities in real time.
Vet and onboard new carriers using Highway to ensure compliance and safety standards are met.
Monitor shipments through pickup, transit, and delivery, proactively resolving service issues.
Manage and grow a personal book of business with a focus on profitability, retention, and customer satisfaction.
Collaborate with internal operations, accounting, and leadership teams to ensure smooth load execution and billing accuracy.
Stay current on market trends, capacity shifts, and pricing dynamics to provide competitive intelligence to customers and carriers.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in business, Supply Chain, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
2–5 years of experience in freight brokerage or 3PL sales with a proven track record of building accounts and carrier relationships.
Exceptional negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills.
Experience using DAT and Highway or similar tools for carrier sourcing and vetting.
Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment with high call volumes and tight deadlines.
Self‑motivated, entrepreneurial mindset with a strong drive to build and grow a personal book of business.
Proficiency in CRM systems and Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Outlook, Teams).
Performance Indicators
Gross profit and revenue growth generated from personal book of business.
New shipper accounts are onboard and retention rate of existing customers.
Carrier compliance and on‑time pickup/delivery performance.
Margin per load and cost‑to‑service efficiency.
Call activity, pipeline development, and conversion rates.
Customer satisfaction and service recovery results.
