Overview
Provides proactive, family-centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans and support for the mother-infant breastfeeding dyad. The Lactation Consultant is fully collaborative with the patient, patient’s family, significant others and members of the healthcare team. This position is part time starting at roughly 20 hours per week with the possibility to evolve into a full time role.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Initiates outreach calls to parents of newborns to establish initial contact
Provides lactation assessment, management, education and provides early support and education
Performs consultations, telephone triage and prenatal education as appropriate
Offers post-delivery consultative care to patients: breastfeeding/chest-feeding, family bonding and planning
Communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers, being an advocate for patient at all times
Coordinates and facilitates breastfeeding classes to small groups
Documents patient education and progress in accordance with practice standards and guidelines
Provides in‑service education and support to clinical staff
Maintains breastfeeding supplies for all practice locations
Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements
Nurse Practitioner (NP), Nurse‑Midwife (CNM) or Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)
Board Certified Lactation Consultant Certification (IBCLC) required
Bilingual preferred
Prior experience in lactation consulting preferred
Ability to work independently
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a wide range of personality types and various cultural backgrounds
Strong relationship‑building skills with clients
Establish and maintain records, reports and statistical data
