Job Description The Registered Nurse in the Obstetrical Department delivers direct patient care utilizing the Nursing Process to patients with obstetrical, and neonatal health needs. He or she collaborates with other health professionals in coordinating patient care and provides direction to other non-licensed personnel within the department. Is reponsible for applying the nursing process in the care of the breastfeeding mother and infant, with a focus on clinical assessment and support of lactation needs, encouragement, education and consultation. The RN lactation consultant possesses professional knowledge of the breastfeeding process, antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum health care and psychosocial issues. Knowledge of premature infants and from newborns to toddlers. Possesses knowledge of the breastfeeding care and educational principles, practices, procedures and techniques required to assess learning needs, develop an educational plan, and teach/counsel staff, patients and family members and evaluate the effectiveness of the instruction.
Education And Credentials Graduate of an accredited program in nursing required and American Heart Association-Basic Life Support (BLS) required upon hire and must be maintained thereafter. Existing WCHOB RNs must acquire BLS certification as part of the training and orientation to OCH. Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing or Specialty certification required, if one is absent upon hire or transfer into the position it must be obtained within three (3) years. Lactation Consultant – American Academy of Pediatric NRP within one year and must maintain thereafter. Registered Nurse upon hire required. IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is the first preference. If absent upon bidding, must be obtained within two years of hire/transfer effective 6/10/14 and remain current and active. If IBCLC is absent upon bidding, CLC (Certified Lactation Counselor) is the second preference.
Experience 1 year of experience in RN position in Mother Baby, Lactation, NICU or Labor & Delivery within past 3 years required.
