role at
Homes for Veterans
This is a volunteer opportunity provided by Taproot Foundation, a nonprofit creating social change through pro bono connections. Homes for Veterans is seeking an experienced volunteer with deep expertise in federal grant applications, specifically VA grants such as the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, to support our organization through the early stages of pursuing this funding opportunity. The volunteer will assist our leadership team with strategic guidance and technical expertise, rather than day-to-day writing. We are looking for someone who understands the VA Notice of Funding Opportunity process, federal compliance requirements, eligibility criteria, and competitive positioning for SSVF or similar federal programs.
Review the current SSVF Notice of Funding Opportunity and translate requirements into a clear action plan.
Assess Homes for Veterans’ organizational readiness and eligibility for SSVF funding.
Advise on program design and alignment with SSVF priorities, including homelessness prevention and housing stability.
Identify documentation, policies, and data needed for a competitive federal application.
Provide feedback on draft narrative sections, budget considerations, and required attachments.
Offer best practices and lessons learned from successful VA or federal grant applications.
This project is time-bound and advisory in nature, suitable for a volunteer who can contribute 2–5 hours per week over several weeks and provide high-level expertise that will strengthen our application strategy and long-term federal funding capacity.
By volunteering on this project, you will help Homes for Veterans take a critical step toward expanding and strengthening housing stability for veterans who are at risk of homelessness or falling through the cracks of traditional systems. Your expertise will help us build the bridge between housing stability services and physical accessibility, two areas that are deeply connected but rarely funded together.
You will directly shape our ability to:
Align our programs with VA and federal housing stability initiatives.
Determine readiness and competitiveness for SSVF funding.
Build internal systems that meet federal and VA standards.
Strengthen partnerships with VA-funded providers and community stakeholders.
Homes for Veterans Mission: To provide barrier‑free renovations to disabled veteran homeowners at no cost to the Veterans or their families.
