Job Purpose and Scope This temporary, grant‑funded position assists college students with academic support through mentoring. The Specialist helps students adjust to college life, provides high‑level information, and works one‑on‑one and in group settings with TRiO students.
Essential Job Functions
Provide general information related to TRIO SSS
Guide students in developing accountability for their decisions and in understanding how those decisions impact their success, including study skills, time management, academic course intervention, and other college‑related skills areas as needed.
Set appointments with students in TRIO SSS for mentoring support and coordinate tutor and tutee meetings
Record, prepare, maintain, and review forms, and perform data entry
Provide handouts and/or forms to potential TRIO SSS participants
Plan a variety of TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) events and activities
Participate in panels for TRIO SSS workshops and visiting groups
Assist with or provide event preparation and give campus tours
Maintain knowledge of multiple programs
Perform other reasonable, related job duties as assigned

Working knowledge of general office procedures and practices
Proficiency with common office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)

Physical Abilities The work is sedentary and typically involves sitting. Occasional walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, or driving may occur. No special physical demands are required.
Work Schedule and Conditions
Schedule will depend on department needs
Equipment used includes a PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and general office equipment
Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the position’s functions
Work is performed in a climate‑controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and at least 1 year of related experience (e.g., academic coaching, tutoring, mentoring), or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Must be a currently enrolled Lone Star student pursuing a course of study with at least 24 credit hours (verified via transcripts)
Current GPA of at least 3.0
Compensation Hourly Pay Rate: $15.60
