Mission To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities.
General Description Under the direction of the Palo Duro Canyon State Park Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, the Park Ranger I (Park Operations Trainee) performs routine operations work in a state park and provides an avenue to obtain relevant experience for future positions in park operations, such as management, interpretation/education, administration, maintenance, resource protection, and law enforcement.
Duties include learning all aspects of park administration, operations and management; natural and cultural resource management; facility, grounds and equipment maintenance management; interpretation and education programming; customer service, fee collection, revenue control and fiscal accountability; marketing and promotional programming; park patrols including visitor contact and law enforcement observation. Performs special projects and attends training programs to enhance overall knowledge and skills. Provides operational support to other State Parks on request.
Responsibilities
Perform a complete range of tasks to learn all aspects of park administration, operations and management.
Manage natural and cultural resource activities within the park.
Maintain facilities, grounds and equipment; oversee maintenance management.
Manage interpretation and education programming.
Provide customer service, fee collection, revenue control and fiscal accountability.
Support marketing and promotional programming.
Conduct park patrols, visitor contact, and law enforcement observation.
Assist with special projects, assignments and training programs.
Support other state parks in operations and natural resource management.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
No work experience required.
Valid Texas state driver’s license at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Park Administration, Recreation and Parks, Public Administration, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resources Management, Forestry, Biology, Anthropology, Archeology, History or a closely related field.
Current or prior State Parks Internship Program experience.
Experience working with the public.
Experience as a supervisor or team leader.
Experience in revenue or budget management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of park operations and maintenance practices.
Knowledge of natural and cultural resources fundamentals.
Knowledge of financial and business practices.
Knowledge of human resource practices and procedures.
Knowledge of methods of interpretation and education.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Provide customer service in a courteous and professional manner.
Computer skills with standard office equipment, MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
Ability to manage several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and contacts.
Ability to manage groups, facilitate meetings, and make public presentations.
General maintenance techniques.
