Duties Install, maintain, test, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate potable‑water and wastewater utility systems requiring intermediate‑to‑journey level skills. The position is located in the Montebello, VA/Big Island, VA, Bedford, VA, and Blowing Rock, NC sub‑districts.

Montebello, Virginia

– Blue Ridge Parkway, Montebello Maintenance Area; 25 mi from Lexington, VA, 30 mi from Waynesboro, VA.

Big Island, Virginia

– James River Maintenance Area; 20 mi from Lynchburg, VA.

Bedford, Virginia

– Peaks of Otter Maintenance Area; surrounding community access.

Blowing Rock, North Carolina

– small‑town area on the Parkway; local services and recreation available.

Requirements – Conditions of Employment

U.S. citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program participation.

Subjection to drug testing (pre‑appointment and random).

Valid driver’s license; submit motor‑vehicle operator’s license, driving record, and state‑sealed records of all valid/previous licenses.

Obtain & maintain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License within 12 months of appointment.

Obtain & maintain a current NPS Working Sawyer certification within 12 months.

Obtain & maintain a State Water Operator License within 12 months.

May be required to complete four‑wheel drive vehicle training.

Wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards; uniform allowance provided.

Working on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, shift work may be required.

May be required to travel overnight away from home; must obtain a government charge card.

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Qualifications – Job‑Related Factors

Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision (screen‑out).

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.

Technical practices – theoretical precision, artistic.

Interpretation of instructions, specifications, and blueprints.

Use and maintenance of tools and equipment.

Knowledge of materials.

Additional Requirements – Education & Experience

A minimum of 18 years old or 16 years old with:

High‑school graduation or equivalent.

Formal vocational training program completion.

Statement from school authorities favoring employment.

Current enrollment in secondary school with part‑time employment under a formal student employment program.

No substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade positions.

Probationary Period A 1‑year probationary period during which fitness, performance, and alignment with agency goals are evaluated. Without written certification of continued employment the appointment terminates after probation.

Physical Demands Moderately heavy physical effort; lifting up to 40 pounds; frequent standing, walking, bending, and climbing. Work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms in hard‑to‑reach locations.

Working Conditions Indoors and outdoors; exposure to weather conditions, biological hazards, gases (methane, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide), electrical shock, loud noises, acids, hydraulic fluids. PPE required (face shields, gloves, hard‑toe shoes, respirators, protective clothing). Safety meetings, training, and regulations are mandatory. Motor vehicle and heavy equipment operation may be required.
