Position overview

Title: Golf Course Superintendent Reports to: General Manager Supervises: Supervising positions

Golf course superintendents are entrusted with the maintenance, operations, and management of the course. They carefully manage maintenance inputs, conserve natural resources, and influence the playing areas that golfers interact with.

Essential job functions

Lead construction and maintenance of the golf course.

Maintain and repair construction and course maintenance equipment.

Provide professional advice, opinions, assistance, and services to the facility’s board of directors or managing body as required.

Participate in all long‑range planning meetings.

Manage and maintain golf course properties including the course, maintenance equipment, clubhouse grounds, open spaces, wooded areas, and a sod farm and nursery.

Construct, renovate, or reconstruct properties, coordinating with maintenance staff or contractors.

Prepare annual budgets for maintenance and capital improvements and enforce board policies.

Interview, hire, train, supervise, and, when necessary, terminate a staff of employees.

Plan maintenance and project work, applying agronomic and administrative expertise.

Schedule and route personnel and equipment; conduct inspections to evaluate management standards.

Acquire equipment, purchase supplies, and control inventory and expenditures to keep costs within approved budgets.

Maintain accurate records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide applications, etc.

Communicate regularly with top management to discuss activities, goals, and member/customer input.

Qualifications

Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices.

Working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices, and methods.

Thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of golf.

High degree of administrative and executive ability, problem‑solving, and decision‑making.

Proficiency in computer use, Microsoft Office, and related applications.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws affecting golf operations.

Participation in continuing education opportunities.

Current state certification or license as a pesticide applicator.

A degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, or related field.

Minimum of 5 years as a Golf Course Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.

Strong knowledge of irrigation systems, pesticide application, and turfgrass diseases and pests.

Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Proven ability to manage a budget and control costs effectively.
