Position Overview The SUE Technician III role supports the Geomatics department by accurately locating, identifying, and assessing subsurface utilities using SUE data collection and analysis. The SUE Technician III is responsible for overseeing complex SUE field operations, ensuring data quality, safety, and efficiency while mentoring less experienced SUE technicians. The SUE Technician III works closely with SUE Analysts, Project Managers, and other team members to deliver data that supports the planning and design of projects.
Key Responsibilities
Assisting the SUE Analyst in the deployment of a SUE field crew and completing field activity logs, safety forms and permits
Effectively collect data using electromagnetic (EM) locators, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and vacuum excavation equipment
Competence in MicroStation Drafting, Geomatics and Engineering technologies
Perform complex utility designations and test holes to accurately identify, mark, and document subsurface utilities
Ensure the accuracy and completeness of utility data collected, verifying quality prior to submission to office support staff or SUE Analyst
Aids in maintaining a safe and respectful work environment by following company policies, procedures, and by completing JHAs
Represent McAdams in the field with professionalism through proper conduct and presentable appearance
Operate and help drive a vacuum excavation truck and perform test holes to expose utilities
Follow guidelines and company standards set forth for the Geomatics department
Assist with maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and work sites
Understands the operation of company equipment to accurately locate and identify subsurface utilities
Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to SUE Technicians I and II
Support the development of standard field procedures and contribute to process improvement initiatives
Communicate effectively with the SUE Analyst, Project Manager, and Group Manager regarding project status, challenges, and resource needs
Ensure compliance with local regulations, permits, and project‑specific safety protocols
Maintain organized field logs, safety forms, permits, and equipment usage records
Interact courteously with clients, contractors, and the public while maintaining a positive company image
Skills + Experience
High School diploma or GED
4+ years of utility designating experience
4+ years of survey experience
Must be willing to travel to and from sites, some overnight travel may be required
Must know how to operate Survey equipment (total stations and GPS) and how to use a vacuum excavation truck
Possess good computer and technical skills
Must have a valid driver's license
Successfully pass a motor vehicle records check, drug test, and functional assessment
