Assistant Recreation Leader is a part-time position with the Community Resources Department of the City of Azusa. The person in this position does beginning level work in the leadership of simple recreation activities at a playground, park, or recreational area. Serves as an assistant to a higher level recreation leader, working under close supervision until familiar with the program and techniques that are standard under the Community Resources Department. Exercises some supervision over lower level employees and volunteers to the program; and does related work as needed. Essential Functions
Provides group and individual instruction in athletics, games, arts and crafts, and related recreational activities. Leads games and contests. Leads hobby groups and youth groups. Conducts children's activities and games of low organization. Provides leadership in athletic activities. Issues and receives playground supplies. Maintains discipline. Aids in making reports. May perform other related duties as assigned. Qualification Guidelines
Education and/or Experience: Graduation from high school and experience as a paid or volunteer leader or participant in varied recreation, athletic or related activities. Licenses or Certification: All certifications must be current and obtained by the time of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid American Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid Card. Selected candidates must have a valid California ID or Driver's License. A Tuberculosis clearance is required as part of the physical and background process. This position may be assigned to work either Day Camp, Recreation, and/or Pool Swim hours for the duration of the season. Special Requirements/Physical, Mental, Environmental Conditions
This position requires sitting, standing, and walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements above and below shoulder level in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and acute hearing is required when providing face-to-face service. The need to lift and carry supplies and other materials weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this position will work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations. The City of Azusa does not pay into Social Security, so part-time employees are enrolled in the Accumulation Program for Part-Time and Limited-Service Employees (APPLE). Part-time employees pay 3.75% of wages into this retirement program and the City matches the employee's (3.75% of wages) share. Paid Sick Leave: Effective July 1, 2015, part-time employees accrue sick leave beginning with the first full pay period of employment on the basis of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked. The maximum accrual per year is 48 hours. A waiting period of 90 days is required before an employee may be eligible to use paid sick leave. Although paid sick leave can be carried over year to year, an employee can only accumulate up to a maximum of 48 hours and may use up to 24 hours in any one year. This position is not covered by any other medical benefits. Part-time employees are not considered to be part of the City of Azusa Merit and Civil Service System and are thus designated as non-classified employees. Part-time employees are "at will" employees and, as such, may be terminated at any time without any right of appeal.
