Senior Recreation Leader

This position serves as Senior Recreation Leader in the Los Alamitos Recreation and Community Services Department and performs a variety of recreational program assistance tasks, which include planning, organizing, setup, supervision, and teardown of various recreational activities & events. The position can work in a variety of recreation and senior programs and classes, community services, adaptive programming, aquatics programming, youth day camps, youth and adult sports, staff-led classes, marketing, special events, and/or assisting with other projects as assigned. Approximately (10-40) hours per week, depending on season/program, with a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and selected holidays for City events or programs. There are currently several openings, including in the following areas: Sunburst Fields, Preschool, Day Camp, and Front Desk. Examples of Duties
Essential job functions include: Plan, organize, supervise, and lead recreational programs and activities. Communicate effectively verbally to participants, parents, and community members. Effectively monitor and lead Recreation Leader staff and volunteers. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing to supervisor, staff, and participants. Be enthusiastic and maintain a high level of customer service. Be able to lift over their head, twist & turn a minimum of 20 pounds. Be able to stand for a long period of time, either indoors or outdoors. Other duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications
Desirable knowledge, skills, and abilities include: Knowledge of core areas of recreation, including but not exclusive of aquatics, day camp, parks programs, preschool, youth programs, staff-led classes, youth and adult sports, older adult programming, and/or special events. Previous experience in working with youth, adults, and/or older adults in recreation programs. Ability to read and follow directions. Be able to work a flexible work schedule, including weekend, evening, and holiday hours Desirable experience and training includes: Currently attending or graduated from high school. College coursework with a major in recreation or a similar field is preferred. Prefer a dynamic and enthusiastic personality with the ability to motivate staff and youth. Be able to work with people of all ages (youth, teens, adults, older adults). Effectively handle emergency and/or stressful situations. Have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.). Be able to participate in indoor and outdoor physical activities such as games, excursions, sports, field maintenance, event setup & teardown, basic cooking, etc. Minimum one (1) year of municipal recreation experience; or any combination of training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, ability, and skill needed for the position. Certification in First Aid, CPR, AED required upon hired or within four weeks of hiring. Supplemental Information
A City Screening Committee will review all applications. Those candidates with the most relevant qualifications will be invited to participate in an oral interview to evaluate training, experience, and personal qualifications. Interviews will be held in person, no exceptions. Paid sick leave: After (30) days of employment, will accrue one (1) hour of sick leave for every (30) hours worked, and you can use up to (40) hours or (5 days) of paid sick leave in one year.
