Habilitation Specialist

Job Type: Full-time Job Summary: Under general direction, the Habilitation Specialist is responsible for designing and implementing individualized programs for the acquisition of functional skills that will lead to increased independent community participation for the individuals served. The role includes supervising Habilitation Assistants and ensuring compliance with agency and regulatory requirements. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as a liaison between the agency, the individuals served, and families. Develop and implement day habilitation plans. Supervise non‑professional staff in the execution of habilitation plans. Participate in individual program planning sessions. Orient, train, evaluate, delegate, supervise, and recommend hiring and disciplining of subordinate staff. Collaborate with Service Coordinators for program development and referrals. Maintain attendance records and other required documentation. Utilize community resources appropriately for day habilitation and community integration. Carry out basic administrative tasks related to caseload and other assignments. Plan group and individual activities and assign staff to implement them. Train support staff in daily routines, program planning, and general procedures. Attend supervisory staff meetings. Prepare and adapt materials, set up furniture and equipment for program activities. Participate in in‑service training programs. Provide support/coverage to other classrooms as needed. Participate in activities outside the activity room when necessary (e.g., trips, pool, gym). Select and utilize educational materials. Teach individuals served to become more independent. Drive agency vehicles for transportation and related duties. Assist individuals with transportation between buses and buildings. Provide direct care responsibilities such as feeding and toileting. Initiate precautions within the established framework to ensure safe work completion. Perform other related duties as requested. Qualifications
Valid New York State Driver’s License preferred. Fluency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English. Good oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction with co‑workers, individuals served, and families. Good organizational and teaching skills. Proficiency in using a personal computer and relevant software. Ability to operate wheelchairs and adaptive equipment. Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of client records. Analytical skills to assess problems and determine corrective actions. Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or related field. One year of post‑graduate experience required. Compensation
