Overview
The G5 Trail Collective is looking for a candidate to perform trail work in the National Forest to build, repair and/or maintain recreational trails and related infrastructure. The candidate must be skilled and proficient in trailwork and/or related projects. The candidate will also monitor and assess trails and report back to the Trail Specialist Crew Leader with observations and solutions to problems. The candidate will be part of a trail crew for regular maintenance and special projects. The candidate will be an employee of Camp Grier, working for the G5 Trail Collective Program in Old Fort, NC or Nebo, NC.
Duration 5 years+
Education Highschool diploma or GED.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements
Show the utmost ability to work independently and with other crew members into the National Forest, follow clear safety protocols and tool instructions, have a sense of accomplishment and pride of trail stewardship.
Be able to assess trail issues and develop solutions to problems.
Have an overall understanding and direction of the health of the National Forest for its recreational needs and uses.
Have knowledge, experience, and skill in basic sustainable trail maintenance techniques (minimum of 1+ years), including the use of trail tools, specialty tools, construction tools, and safety equipment.
Have excellent communication skills with the public, staff and coworkers.
Have a valid driver's license and be able to operate a truck, trailers and other related equipment for transport and conducting trail work.
Preferred Additional Knowledge & Skills
WFA or WFR or similar first aid.
Chainsaw certification (bucking/limbing/felling) or the ability to get certified in those modalities.
Equipment operation of excavators, UTVs, tractors, mowers, skid steers, tracked haulers, etc., or the ability to get certified in those modalities.
Experience of specialty tools—welders, grip hoists, rigging equipment, jacks, etc., or the ability to get certified in those modalities.
Knowledge of using high lines, cables, advanced rigging and rock work, or the ability to get certified in those modalities.
Carpentry—framing, roofing, foundation, rigging, etc., or the ability to get certified in those modalities.
B.S. in Natural Resources, Biology, Soil Sciences, Geology, Hydrology, Psychology, Outdoor Recreation or a combination of related fields of study, or the ability to get certified in those modalities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Be able to successfully take direction and understand the process of working on trails from the G5 Trails Specialist.
Be able to work in a harmonious fashion with co‑workers and superintendent.
Assess and prescribe solutions to trail maintenance problems.
Work with the G5 Volunteer Coordinator and G5 Director to lead and work on volunteer trail work days as ongoing G5/USFS projects as needed.
Monitor trail use through data collection such as trail counters.
Support other maintenance duties that are not appropriate for volunteers like tree removal.
Support G5 events as needed.
Maintain and repair G5 tools and equipment as needed.
Monitor visitor parking, trail use, and interactions with local residents to ensure everyone is able to enjoy recreational resources appropriately.
Physical Demands The candidate routinely lifts, pushes, pulls and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Work will routinely require walking multiple miles over rough and uneven terrain. The employee will have office space at Camp Grier, but may work anywhere within driving distance of McDowell County. Most of the work will be performed in a mountainous, forested environment where the terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky, wet, and covered with thick and tangled vegetation. Work can occur in inclement weather (rain, snow, freezing temperatures or temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and under dusty conditions. Work requires the use of safety equipment such as boots, gloves, goggles, and hardhats. Fieldwork consists of invasive species management, facility construction maintenance, trail maintenance (brushing, digging, grubbing, raking, rock work, surface hardening, etc.), tree removal, using hand and power tools, project site assessments, building bridges and related infrastructure.
Reports To G5 Trail Collective Trails Specialist. Based out of Old Fort at the G5 Workcenter or Nebo at the USFS Workcenter.
Compensation $49,000 a year.
Benefits Retirement: Camp Grier will match, up to 3%, of an employee contribution to the Camp. Time off: Camp Grier will provide three weeks of paid time off to be used at the employee's discretion.
