Description Under direction of the supervisor, Maintenance Assistants perform semi-skilled activities and tasks typical of a variety of trade specialties such as carpentry, mechanical, electrical, motor equipment, or painting. Tasks involve the use of hand and/or portable power tools, shop equipment, measuring and testing instruments to perform maintenance, repairs, renovations, and alterations. Incumbents are considered essential personnel and may report to state and/or federal supervisory personnel.
Responsibilities
Perform routine semi-skilled maintenance and repair of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, and other facility services and equipment.
Perform general grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, mowing lawns, trimming trees, maintaining roads and sidewalks, snow and ice removal, and removing obstructions from building and surrounding areas.
Perform general facilities maintenance including cleaning common areas, offices, restrooms, painting, and moving furniture.
Troubleshoot facility, equipment, and machinery problems and work to resolve concerns in a timely manner.
Maintain automotive equipment and other machinery.
May perform journeymen-level activities under supervision or after receiving detailed instructions.
Serve as primary point of contact on‑site for contractors and vendors.
May supervise appropriate subordinates to accomplish required tasks.
Assist with maintenance requirements for the Nonmilitary Use Program where applicable.
Demonstrate reliability and trustworthiness, and complete and attend required training.
Perform other duties as assigned, with periodic overtime and travel as required.
Qualifications
Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local facility and building codes, health and safety standards, and regulations.
Ability to use tools, machines, equipment, and materials safely and efficiently.
Ability to read and interpret facility and grounds plans, specifications, manuals, and blueprints.
Comfortable working at heights (ladder climbing, scaffolds, platforms, lifts).
Ability to push, pull, lift and carry heavy objects and equipment (50+ lbs).
Ability to work outside in various temperatures and inclement weather for extended periods.
Ability to work independently or in a team, following written and verbal directions.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Operating a motor vehicle and other motorized equipment, and use of light mechanized construction equipment.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office software.
Reading and writing proficiency in English.
Demonstrated reliability and trustworthiness.
Minimum Qualifications
Two years of full‑time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under a skilled trades worker or other appropriate supervisor, or completion of an appropriate two‑year technical school.
At least 18 years of age.
Read and write in English.
Comfortable working at heights (ladder climbing, scaffolds, platforms, lifts).
Push, pull, lift and carry heavy objects (50+ lbs).
Work in confined spaces per requirements and training.
Work outside in varying temperatures and inclement weather for extended periods.
Operate and maintain required tools, machinery and equipment for assigned craft.
Use Microsoft Word and Excel.
Complete required computer training within 90 days of receiving access.
Valid driver’s license in New York State.
Preferred Qualifications
High School Graduate or GED equivalent with college‑level credits.
Supervisory experience.
Expertise or certification in a trade and proven record of working on complex construction or maintenance assignments.
Additional Comments
This position is not in the Classified Service of New York State but is covered under New York State Military Law. Current Civil Service employees will lose seniority within the Classified Service upon selection.
Current Start Rate: $42,641.00
Job Rate: $52,413.00
All hires begin at Start Rate unless prior state experience affords eligibility for hiring step increase as determined by OSC.
