Sumter Utilities Inc. seeks overhead Crews (Foreman/A Lineman/B Lineman/C Lineman/Operator/Groundman). Note: This description includes eligibility, responsibilities, qualifications, and benefits. Foreman: Provide direct supervision & technical guidance to Linemen, Apprentices and Groundmen; coordinate on-site crew mobilization; enforce safety requirements; manage materials and equipment; assist with planning, budgeting and schedules; read site plans and scopes of work; communicate with project personnel; ensure safety and compliance; travel as needed; possess HS diploma or equivalency; coordinate with multiple levels within the company; lead crews and ensure safe operations; experience with digger derricks, bucket trucks, trenchers, and groundwork; capable of working at heights and performing bucket rescue/escape; lead Job Task Safety Analyses and tailgate briefings. A Lineman: Perform rigorous physical labor; identify voltage on circuits; read blueprints; operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, backhoes; climb poles/structures; install and remove PPE; plan safe work; abide by minimum approach distances; demonstrate teamwork and leadership in the absence of foreman; travel and work away from home; maintain safety and quality standards. B Lineman: Similar to A Lineman with emphasis on new construction, maintenance or repair of energized and de-energized lines; setting poles and anchors; inspect and maintain tools and vehicles; assist with framing and setting line structures; operate in heights and confined spaces; crew leadership support as needed. C Lineman: Apprentice/entry path; enroll in SUI apprenticeship program; set poles and anchors; work at heights; learn blueprints and voltages; assist in inspection and troubleshooting; operate aerial devices; support crew in building and setting line structures; develop basic lineman skills and safety practices. Equipment Operator: Safely operate heavy equipment (line/bucket trucks, knuckle cranes, digger Derricks); string overhead wire; set poles and anchors; maintain vehicles and tools; maintain safety and training in lineman tasks; perform bucket rescue/escape and understand grounding and rigging principles. Groundman: Perform ground tasks for construction and maintenance of overhead lines; follow directions from Foreman; apply safety and first aid training; perform manual tasks, dig pole holes, flag traffic, organize tools and materials; assist in job site setup and cleanup; may receive training in vehicle and small equipment operation as aptitude allows. Qualifications
Able/willing to travel long distances on short notice; able/willing to work extended periods in various locations; able/willing to work overtime; strong commitment to safety and compliance. High school diploma or equivalent; ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and scopes of work. Valid Class A CDL is highly preferred; if not possessed, may be required to obtain within 90 days of employment. Ability to climb structures (wood/steel) and work at heights up to 60 feet (preferred); basic bucket rescue/escape capability. Team-oriented with strong communication and leadership skills; able to work independently or as part of a crew; able to follow directions and perform duties as requested. Prior experience with electrical distribution construction and knowledge of safety best practices; knowledge of grounding procedures and minimum approach distance.
