Under the direction of a physician, the RRT provides respiratory care duties and functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Sets up and administers routine and complex respiratory procedures to patients including pediatrics, Emergency/Trauma, Step-Down Critical Care, and Adult Critical Care Units using protocol-driven care. Provides critical and emergent care, airway stabilization and management, non-invasive ventilation, and acute care ventilator management. Demonstrates Mercyhealth values and adheres to organizational policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned. Responsibilities
Performs routine therapies that aid in the treatment, diagnosis, and evaluation of their cardiopulmonary status. Initiates, monitors, evaluates, and weans invasive and non-invasive ventilation; makes parameter recommendations based on clinical and technical assessment, patient response, lab values, and status. Initiates and provides ongoing evaluation of treatment regimens including medication delivery and oxygen administration through therapist-driven protocols; conducts patient assessments to determine needs, frequencies, and duration of therapy ordered by physician. Assesses patients clinically before and after medications, procedures, or devices; recommends initial therapy, changes in therapy, or discontinuation as appropriate. Monitors, educates, and documents patient and/or family on therapies, medications, goals, and equipment during treatment. Documents work timely and accurately in the patient electronic medical record and departmental records. Demonstrates competence in setup, calibration, and troubleshooting of mechanical ventilators, noninvasive ventilation devices, therapeutic bronchoscopies, and pulmonary function screens. Cleans, disassembles, disinfects, assembles, and maintains equipment; stocks departmental supplies. Performs and documents emergency rounds, oxygen saturation checks, and titrates oxygen per protocol during rounds. Performs therapies in accordance with universal precautions and proper body mechanics; uses sound judgment in evaluating situations. Responds to emergent care situations and assists with resuscitation by providing chest compressions, airway management, and ventilatory support per American Heart Association guidelines and Code Team Leader direction. Transports adult patients on ventilators or non-invasive devices for intrahospital procedures and testing. Provides developmentally appropriate care for diverse patient populations and demonstrates competence in pediatric and adult care as assigned. Maintains proficiency in processing and interpreting point-of-care blood gases, glucose, and electrolytes; collaborates on quality control as applicable. May require on-call coverage as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. Education & Experience
Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care Program CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE
RRT - CRT will be accepted for RTs not eligible for RRT; all other CRTs must earn RRT within 1 year of hire. CPR ACLS within 6 months of hire NRP within 90 days of orientation (for departments requiring delivery attendance) IL and/or WI Respiratory Care Practitioner license Culture of Excellence Behavior Expectations
