Duties

Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug related activities.

Prepare comprehensive and succinct criminal investigative reports and deliver briefings for senior personnel and other Federal, state, and local agencies.

Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.

Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and other means.

Testify on behalf of the Federal government in court or before grand juries.

Additional duties may be assigned based upon an individual's unique knowledge, skills, and/or experience.

Basic Agent Training Applicants who have not completed previous federal law enforcement training through another agency must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.

Must sign a mobility agreement confirming acceptance of relocation to any location as needed.

Completion of a pre‑employment medical clearance and annual medical examination required.

Full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph required.

Selective Service registration or exemption required for applicable males.

Applicant must be 21‑36 years old at appointment, or meet veteran or federal civilian law enforcement retirement covered position criteria.

Pass E‑Verify employment verification check.

Serve a 1‑ or 2‑year trial period depending on position.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.

Subject to random drug testing.

Training requirement: successfully complete 16‑20‑week basic agent training held at the DEA Training Academy.

1811 applicants may qualify for the 3‑week transition program if eligible.

Qualifications Applicants must meet all qualification requirements described below by the closing date. For qualifications based on education, submit a transcript that clearly displays conferred degrees or credit hours.

GL‑07 Level Must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑05 level. Experience includes:

Assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law.

Writing reports of findings, results, or accomplishments for law enforcement activities and/or court cases.

Researching, collecting and analyzing data from a variety of sources related to investigations.

Substitution of Education for Experience : One full year of graduate‑level education may substitute for the experience requirement.

Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) : Applicants who have completed a bachelor's degree with SAA may be considered based on class standing, GPA, or honor society membership. Eligibility for upcoming graduates: senior students expected to graduate within 9 months may be considered provided grade requirements are maintained.

GL‑09 Level Must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑07 level. Experience includes:

Assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law.

Collecting and analyzing data from a variety of sources.

Writing reports and conducting briefings of findings and results.

Meeting or corresponding with court officials and law enforcement personnel.

Assisting prosecuting attorneys in preparation of technical aspects of cases or testifying in court or other proceedings.

Substitution of Education for Experience : Master’s degree, two full years of graduate education, or LL.B./J.D. may substitute.

GS‑11 Level One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑09 level. Experience includes:

Conducting or supporting federal criminal investigations.

Developing operational plans and determining investigative priorities.

Operating undercover, conducting surveillance operations, and participating in raids, seizures, and arrests.

Developing and eliciting information from confidential sources.

Interviewing and interrogating persons suspected of violations of law.

Organizing evidence for presentation to prosecution officials and testifying in court.

Substitution of Education for Experience : Ph.D., LL.M., or equivalent may substitute.

Education Education must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education–recognized institution. Foreign education may be considered if comparable to U.S. earned credentials. Pass/fail courses that exceed 10% of the undergraduate workload require class standing or honor society membership to qualify for SAA.

Additional Information

Appointments may be made under 5 CFR 213.3210 (Schedule B) and may convert to permanent career appointments after 3‑4 years.

Probationary/Trial Period: 1‑ to 2‑year period to evaluate performance and fit. Successful completion leads to certification that continued employment advances the public interest.

Special Agents may be required to work substantial overtime, irregular schedules, and may be required to be available for unscheduled work. LEAP (Law Enforcement Availability Pay) is provided.

Medical requirements include moderate to arduous physical exertion, firearms proficiency, and medical clearance. Physical conditions that create hazards disqualify an applicant.

Firearms requirement: authorized to carry a firearm, maintain proficiency, and comply with the Lautenberg Amendment. No misdemeanor domestic violence convictions.

Employment drug policy: applicants must disclose current and past drug usage. Past use may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis.

Mobility Agreement: position may be reassigned to any domestic DEA facility; family support for relocation is required.

Relocation: full relocation expenses for federal-to-federal transfers; new employees cover unapproved expenses.
