Summary This is a public notice for Drug Enforcement Administration Criminal Investigator GL-1811-7/9/11 positions open to U.S. Citizens. Updated: a job announcement will be posted on USAJobs on January 12th and April 6th, 2026.

Duties

Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities.

Prepare comprehensive and succinct criminal investigative reports; deliver briefings for senior personnel and other Federal, state, and local agencies.

Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.

Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and other investigative means.

Testify on behalf of the Federal government in court or before grand juries.

Additional duties may be assigned based upon an individual's unique knowledge, skills, and/or experience.

Basic Agent Training Applicants who have not completed previous federal law‑enforcement training through another federal agency must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program through another federal agency may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.

Sign a mobility agreement confirming relocation to any DEA facility.

Complete pre‑employment medical clearance and annual medical examinations.

Pass a full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph (reciprocity may apply).

Selective Service registration for males born after December 31, 1959.

Age 21–36 at appointment; older age allowed for preference‑eligible veterans or former federal civilian law‑enforcement retirees.

Pass E‑Verify employment verification check.

Serve a 1‑year or 2‑year trial period for fitness evaluation.

Possess a valid state driver’s license.

Subject to random drug testing.

Complete 16‑ to 20‑week Basic Agent Training at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

1811 applicants who completed a federal criminal‑investigation training program may qualify for a 3‑week transition program.

Qualifications – GL‑07 Level

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑05 level, including:

Assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law.

Writing reports of findings, results, or accomplishments for law‑enforcement activities and/or court cases.

Researching, collecting, and analyzing data from various sources related to investigations.

Substitution of education: one full year of graduate‑level education in a field demonstrating the necessary knowledge and skills, or

Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) – completion of a bachelor’s degree with high GPA, higher class standing, or membership in an honored society.

Combination of education and experience: computed percentage of requirements must be at least 100% (time in experience + graduate semester hours).

Qualifications – GL‑09 Level

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑07 level, including:

Assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law.

Collecting and analyzing data from various sources.

Writing reports and conducting briefings for law‑enforcement activities and/or court cases.

Meeting or corresponding with court officials and law‑enforcement personnel to discuss case materials.

Assisting prosecuting attorneys in preparing technical aspects of cases; testifying or presenting evidence.

Substitution of education: Master’s degree (or 2 full years of graduate education leading to one), LL.B. or J.D., or equivalent.

Combination of education and experience: computed percentage of requirements must be at least 100%.

Qualifications – GS‑11 Level

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑09 level, including:

Conducting or supporting federal criminal investigations in collaboration with federal agencies.

Developing operational plans and determining investigative priorities.

Operating undercover, conducting surveillance, participating in raids, seizures, and arrests.

Developing and eliciting information from confidential sources.

Interviewing and interrogating persons suspected of violations of law.

Organizing evidence for presentation to prosecution officials and testifying in court.

Substitution of education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three years of graduate education leading to one.

Combination of education and experience: computed percentage of requirements must be at least 100%.

Additional Information on Eligibility Requirements Education must be accredited by an institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education may be used provided it can be shown comparable to U.S. accredited institutions. Pass/fail courses: if more than 10 % of undergraduate coursework was on a pass/fail basis, SAA must be based on class standing or honor society membership.

Appointments and Probationary Period

Appointments will be made under Schedule B, Excepted Service Appointments. Conversion to permanent Career appointments possible in the third or fourth year.

Probationary/trial period of 1 to 2 years; performance and conduct are evaluated for continued employment.

Law Enforcement Availability Special Agents may work substantial overtime, irregular schedules, weekends, and holidays. Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP) compensates 25 % of base salary.

Medical and Firearms Requirements

Pre‑employment medical examination required; physical condition disqualifying self or others is disqualifying.

Authorization to carry a firearm and maintain proficiency required; compliance with the Lautenberg Amendment is mandatory.

Employment Drug Policy DEA requires disclosure of current and past drug usage; past use may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis.

Mobility Agreement & Relocation

Positions require relocation to any DEA facility. Family support for assignments is required.

Full relocation expenses paid for transfers from another federal position; new federal employees cover non‑DEA expenses.
