Duties

Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug related activities.

Prepare comprehensive and succinct criminal investigative reports and deliver briefings to senior personnel and other Federal, state, and local agencies.

Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.

Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and a variety of other means.

Testify on behalf of the federal government in court or before grand juries.

Additional duties may be assigned based upon an individual's unique knowledge, skills, and/or experience.

Basic Agent Training Applicants who have not completed previous federal law enforcement training through another federal law enforcement agency must attend and complete a 16-week residential training program. Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program through another federal law enforcement agency may qualify for a 3-week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance.

Must sign a mobility agreement to accept relocation as needed.

Complete a pre-employment medical clearance and annual medical examination.

A full-scope pre-employment polygraph is required.

Selective Service registration or exemption required for males born after 12/31/59.

Applicant must be 21–36 years old (or older if preference eligible veteran or in federal retirement).

Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.

Serve a 1-year or 2-year trial period as applicable.

Possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.

Subject to random drug testing.

Successfully complete a 16- to 20-week Basic Agent Training (BAT) course at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia if selected.

3-week Special Agent Transition Program eligibility for qualifying 1811 applicants.

Qualifications Applicants must meet one of the basic qualification requirements described below for this position.

GL-07 Level

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS-05 level.

Duties of experience:

Assist in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law.

Write reports of findings, results, or accomplishments for information or action relating to law enforcement activities and/or court cases.

Research, collect, and analyze data from a variety of sources relating to investigations.

Alternative: One full year of graduate level education in a relevant field (or superior academic achievement).

GL-09 Level

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS-07 level.

Duties of experience:

Assist in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law.

Collect and analyze data from a variety of sources.

Write reports and conduct briefings of findings.

Meet or correspond with court officials and law enforcement personnel.

Assist prosecuting attorneys in preparing technical aspects of cases and present evidence.

Alternative: Master’s or equivalent graduate degree, 2 full years of graduate education leading to such degree, or LL.B./J.D.

GS-11 Level

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS-09 level.

Duties of experience:

Conduct or support federal criminal investigations in collaboration with federal law enforcement agencies.

Develop operational plans and determine investigative priorities.

Operate undercover, conduct surveillance, participate in raids, seizures, and arrests.

Develop and elicit information from confidential sources.

Interview and interrogate persons suspected of violations of law.

Organize evidence for presentation to prosecution officials and testify in court.

Alternative: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 years of graduate education leading to such degree.

Education Education must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education accredited institution.

Foreign education may be used if comparable to U.S. accredited education. Evidence must be provided.

Appointments & Probationary Period

Appointments according to 5 CFR 213.3210 (Schedule B) as Excepted Service appointments; may convert to permanent Career appointments after 3-4 years.

One to two-year trial period; employment may be terminated unless certification of continued employment is received.

Performance and conduct are assessed.

Medical & Firearms Requirements

Pre-employment medical exam required; physical fitness limited by condition.

Authorized to carry a firearm and maintain proficiency; compliant with Lautenberg Amendment.

Additional Information Special Agents may be required to work overtime, irregular schedules, including weekends and holidays.

Mobility Agreement & Relocation

Position subject to reassignment to any domestic DEA facility.

Full relocation expenses paid for individuals transferring from another federal position; limited for new federal employees.
