Recreation Specialist (Community Centers) Job Summary Under general direction, the Recreation Specialist is responsible for performing recreational work, organizing, and leading participants in activities sponsored by the City. The role may include functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Location Community centers across various areas of San Antonio. The Department may adjust location and hours as needed.

Work Schedule Schedules rotate bi‑weekly (see example below). Shift times are subject to seasonal changes.

Week 1: Monday – Thursday 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.; Friday 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Week 2: Monday – Thursday 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Essential Job Functions

Confers with staff, parents, and advisory councils on new activities to increase interest and participation.

Conducts classes across a range of skills, areas, and age levels, including pre‑schoolers.

Implements one or more recreational programs.

Plans activities, presentations, and special events.

Issues and receives apparatus and equipment used by participants, including lifting items up to 15 pounds.

Assists in maintaining attendance reports and other necessary records.

Maintains equipment and facilities.

Accompanies participants to tournaments and contests; occasionally officiates games.

Recruits, trains, and oversees volunteer workers and tournament participants.

Assists in planning, promoting, and conducting recreational activities for all age groups.

Assists with regular inventories and ensures adequate supply levels.

Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Adult Senior Focus: adapts equipment and programs for older adults, considering motor skill and mobility concerns.

Fitness Focus: performs fitness assessments and assists in developing individual exercise plans.

Job Requirements (Minimum)

High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency.

One (1) year of work experience in recreational activities.

Valid Class "C" Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience distributing recreation equipment and tracking inventory.

Experience implementing programs in sports, fitness, nature, science, teen, art, and/or education for various ages.

Experience officiating sports events.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge of the specialty field and techniques used in organized recreation for all age groups.

Knowledge of teaching techniques, procedures, and methods.

Ability to develop, organize, and direct specialized programs.

Effective communication skills.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with City staff and the public.

Ability to direct large groups during activities.

Ability to organize shows and special events.

Physical ability to perform all job requirements, with or without accommodations.

Work occurs in both indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.
