Overview The Los Angeles Times is seeking a baseball writer to cover the Los Angeles Dodgers. The ideal candidate will bring a deep knowledge and passion for baseball and fresh ideas on how to bring enterprise to a grueling, daily beat. The reporter must contribute to a wide range of storytelling platforms and be open to learning new digital skills as they emerge.
The candidate is expected to produce clear, detailed reporting on tight deadlines, cultivate a wide network of sources inside and outside the Dodgers organization, and demonstrate excellent organizational skills. Fluency in Spanish or Japanese is not mandatory but will enhance candidacy.
The journalist is also expected to have a curiosity and track record with multimedia reporting, including video, audio, and extensive use of social media. The reporter will pursue other avenues of baseball reporting using investigative skills and a keen eye for illuminating exchanges.
We are seeking an innovative and creative journalist with a wide-ranging storytelling background that includes beat writing, long‑form feature writing, and multimedia storytelling. A background in investigative pieces is a plus.
A curiosity and comfort with the full breadth of Dodgers‑related stories, written for a Los Angeles audience, is an expectation.
Working closely with editors, the reporter will generate ambitious ideas and experiment with storytelling forms beyond the printed word to The Times' video, audio, and social platforms. The Sports team is close‑knit and collaborative; being a team player is crucial.
Responsibilities Report and write stories across the beat, turning around game stories, breaking news, explanatory pieces, news features, analysis, and investigations.
Cover subject matter outside one’s knowledge or comfort zone with willingness to learn.
Identify unique angles that advance a story beyond existing coverage.
Write engaging, lively, conversational headlines for a digital, diverse audience.
Meet tight deadlines with brisk turnarounds.
Collaborate with writers, editors, audience engagement staff, and other reporters to achieve department and organizational goals.
Requirements At least 10 years of journalism experience.
Distinctive, engaging writing voice.
Proven ability to write on tight deadlines.
Ability to communicate on multiple platforms (TV, radio, podcast, video, social media).
Commitment to clear communication with editors and colleagues covering Dodgers coverage.
Commitment to innovative multimedia storytelling.
Superior news judgment and understanding of taste, accuracy, and legal considerations.
Ethical, inclusive workplace approach that promotes positive collaboration.
Understanding of importance of accuracy and precision.
Comfortable appearing on outside media on behalf of the L.A. Times.
Location & Travel This position is based in Los Angeles. Regular attendance at L.A. area games, team meetings at The Times' El Segundo office, and weekend, night, and holiday work will be required. Regular travel is expected. Reporters must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle with suitable auto insurance coverage.
