Job Description Make splash in your career as a Recreation Coordinator at the City of Plano. Under general supervision, the Recreation Coordinator is responsible for coordinating recreation classes and activities for all age groups, interests, and abilities for assigned recreational areas. In this dynamic role, you will design and deliver high‑quality aquatic programs for all ages and abilities, including swim lessons, seasonal classes, and special events. You will bring creative program ideas to life, oversee daily operations, recruit and mentor instructors and coaches, and play a key role in producing the recreation catalog three times each year.

Responsibilities

Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate recreation classes for all age groups and abilities; monitor day‑to‑day operations and events, including class and membership registration and monetary transactions.

Create and formulate class ideas; recruit, hire, and schedule class instructors; prepare program information for brochure publication and registration; register and enroll participants; notify participants of class changes, cancellations, and refunds; evaluate class instructors and programs.

Prepare and maintain attendance reports (daily, weekly, monthly) and enrollment and program evaluations (quarterly).

Lead work activities of personnel and volunteers; oversee part‑time staff; recruit and hire new instructors, coaches, and assistants.

Contact local businesses, individuals, and community organizations for program support and participation.

Promote recreation center through newspaper releases, user guides, and leisure brochures.

Investigate and resolve citizen complaints regarding classes, instructors, or the facility.

Monitor the use of recreation equipment and facilities; participate in cleaning and maintenance; order supplies and equipment as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Construct and schedule swim lessons; put together classes and programs for the recreation catalog three times a year.

Typical Decisions The incumbent must establish performance measures for contract instructors, part‑time employees, and volunteers, and evaluate them using those standards.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Recreation programming and facilities planning; supervisory principles and practices; conflict resolution; safety policies and procedures; various recreational activities, leagues, and programs; teaching and instruction methods for various learning styles.

Skill in:

Clear verbal and written communication; first aid and CPR; operating a personal computer and peripheral equipment; creating marketing and promotional materials; preparing and maintaining records and reports.

When assigned to the Aerobatics Gymnastics Program: Coaching gymnastics from beginner through team level.

Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration preferred.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in Aquatics and swim teams. Any work‑related experience that yields acceptable proficiency in the above qualifications is an acceptable substitute.

Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver’s license; American Red Cross CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications. Additional certifications may be required depending on assignment. When assigned to Aquatics: Current Water Safety Instructor Certification required at hire; ARC Lifeguard Certification within 6 months; Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator within 6 months; Water Safety Instructor Trainer certification within 1 year; Water aerobics certifications preferred.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Work performed throughout the Recreation Complex; standing, walking, and possibly reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 25 pounds.

Requires finger dexterity, vision, hearing, and speech for computer and telephone use.

May involve moderate noise, controlled temperature, and exposure to hazardous chemicals in pool areas.

Interaction with upset staff or public may be required.

Hours

School year: Monday & Wednesday 8:00 am‑4:00 pm or 9:00 am‑5:00 pm; Tuesday & Thursday 1:15 pm‑9:15 pm; Rotate monthly Saturdays (typically four in a row) 7:30 am‑3:30 pm.

Summer: Rotate all‑day for two weeks (7:45 am‑3:45 pm or evenings 1:15 pm‑9:15 pm with Saturday mornings).
