Under general supervision, the employee performs various semi‑skilled maintenance and construction tasks and performs related work as required. The employee participates in the work of an assigned park maintenance crew, performs semi‑skilled and unskilled tasks related to grounds maintenance and facility repairs, may lead a crew in the absence of the maintenance crew chief, and performs maintenance on park facilities such as sport courts, picnic areas, playgrounds, amphitheaters, trails, restrooms, parking lots, signs, and fencing. Duties include mowing, snow removal, and other grounds maintenance tasks, rough carpentry, light construction, minor repairs, and painting of facilities as necessary, operation of a tractor/bucket loader with attachments, utility vehicles, mowers, chainsaw, trimmer, blower, and chain saw, and driving a truck with or without a trailer combination to haul equipment and materials. The employee reports conditions requiring special attention and maintains tools and equipment in good working order. The employee completes computerized daily work reports and performs related duties as required.
This advertisement will be used to fill vacancies at Area 1 Maintenance Shop (1929 Pimmit Drive, Falls Church, VA) and Area 4 Maintenance Shop (10405 Burke Lake Road, Fairfax, VA).
The position is a 40‑hour work week, Monday‑Friday, 6:30‑3 p.m. Occasional weekend, evening or holiday work may be required. Positions are subject to transfer to another maintenance operation. Regular attendance is required and is an essential function of the position. The position is designated emergency service personnel.
Illustrative Duties
Perform semi‑skilled tasks, including specialized concrete and asphalt work (e.g., setting forms, finishing).
General maintenance and repair of machinery.
Inspect and approve the work of Maintenance Workers.
Provide guidance and training to Maintenance Workers.
Ensure that all white goods are properly processed prior to recycling.
May lead a crew in absence of Maintenance Crew Chief.
Inspect and review the work of a crew engaged in a variety of basic maintenance, construction, and grounds‑keeping activities.
May lead grass cutting, sodding, seeding, and fertilizing activities.
Lead playground equipment maintenance.
Complete daily and preventive maintenance reports.
Engage in safe working practices and comply with safety programs and guidelines.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of small engine equipment.
Knowledge of single‑axle dump truck, trailer, utility bucket truck, snow plow, spreader, tank truck, water truck, and pickup truck.
Knowledge and ability to use methods, tools, and equipment commonly used in maintenance, construction, and grounds‑keeping activities.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices.
Basic knowledge of computers.
Ability to lead other employees in a variety of activities, maintain records, and prepare reports.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Ability to perform activities requiring manual dexterity.
Ability to perform basic data entry.
Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc.
Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor.
Ability to comprehend and comply with safety practices.
Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees, and supervisors.
Employment Standards Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade and two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.
Certificates and Licenses Required:
Driver’s license (required). Registered pesticide technician required within 6 months.
Necessary Special Requirements:
The appointee will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre‑employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.
Preferred Qualifications
Basic knowledge of computer applications.
Experience supervising staff.
One year of experience towing a truck and trailer.
One year of experience in parks ground maintenance.
One year of experience operating various small engine riding equipment, such as tractors, mowers, utility vehicles.
Experience with chainsaws, string trimmers, blowers, light carpentry, and snow removal equipment.
Physical Requirements Ability to climb on and off equipment; lift up to 50 lbs; operate motor vehicles; stand or walk for extended periods; work in inclement weather and traverse uneven terrain. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
