Summary THIS IS NOT A JOB ANNOUNCEMENT. This is a public notice for Drug Enforcement Administration Criminal Investigator GL-1811-7/9/11 positions open to U.S. Citizens. An official job announcement will be posted on USAJobs on January 12th and April 6th, 2026.

Duties As a DEA Special Agent, you will work as part of an elite criminal investigative team that transforms your talents into action. Your duties will include:

Conducting complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug-related activities.

Preparing comprehensive and succinct investigative reports and delivering briefings to senior personnel and other federal, state, and local agencies.

Identifying and apprehending drug traffickers and arresting individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.

Gathering and analyzing evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and a variety of other means.

Testifying on behalf of the federal government in court or before grand juries.

Additional duties may be assigned based upon an individual's unique knowledge, skills, and/or experience.

Basic Agent Training Applicants who have not completed previous federal law enforcement training through another federal agency must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former GL-1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program through another federal agency may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

Requirements – Conditions of Employment

U.S. citizenship required.

Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.

Must sign a mobility agreement to accept relocation to any location as required.

Must complete a pre‑employment medical clearance and annual examination.

A full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph is required.

Selective Service registration or exemption required for males born after 12/31/59.

Age: at least 21 years and not older than 36 at appointment (exceptions for eligible veterans or retired federal civilian law enforcement).

Must pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.

Subject to a 1‑year or 2‑year trial period for evaluation.

Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

Random drug testing may be required.

Must successfully complete a 16‑ to 20‑week Basic Agent Training (BAT) course at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Qualifications Applicants must meet all required qualification requirements by the closing of the announcement. Submit transcripts showing conferred degrees and relevant credit hours. An unofficial transcript is accepted at application time; official/sealed transcripts required before employment.

GL‑07 Level – Experience

One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GL/GS‑05 level, including: assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law, writing reports, researching and analyzing data, and other related duties.

GL‑07 Level – Education Substitution

One full year of graduate‑level education in a relevant field, or superior academic achievement (SAA) with minimum GPA/standing criteria, may satisfy the requirement.

GL‑09 Level – Experience

One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑07 level, including assisting investigations, collecting and analyzing data, writing reports, briefing officials, and testifying in court.

GL‑09 Level – Education Substitution

Master’s degree, two full years of graduate education, LL.B. or J.D., or equivalent may qualify.

GL‑11 Level – Experience

One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑09 level, demonstrating ability in conducting investigations, developing operational plans, operating undercover, interviewing, and organizing evidence for prosecution.

GL‑11 Level – Education Substitution

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, three years of graduate education leading to Ph.D., LL.M., or equivalent.

Additional Information Appointments are made according to 5 CFR 213.3210; individuals may transition to permanent career appointments after the third or fourth year. Probationary/Trial Period will assess performance, conduct, agency needs, and public interest. Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP) compensates for overtime and irregular schedules. Medical requirements include moderate to arduous physical exertion, firearms proficiency, and compliance with the Lautenberg Amendment. Employment drug policy requires disclosure of current and past drug usage. Mobility agreement and relocation expenses are described. Multiple positions may be filled from this announcement.
