Mission
The mission of the Portland Public Schools is to ensure a challenging, relevant, and joyful education that empowers every learner to make a difference in the world. We build relationships among families, educators, and the community to promote the healthy development and academic achievement of every learner.
Objectives The AmeriCorps VISTA member’s service is driven by our organization’s mission to ensure equal access to educational opportunities that address poverty in our community. We will support language minority students in their post‑secondary aspirations and guide them through that process during their secondary career. We will engage parents and community members from underrepresented groups through volunteerism and participation in workshop sessions for parents and community partners on issues related to raising children in today’s world. We will partner with community‑based organizations in bringing their programs to expand learning opportunities for both students and parents. This is a full‑time, in‑person role.
Responsibilities
Organize and coordinate events and activities for fundraising, parent engagement, and community outreach, including Parent University lecture series, bi‑annual Beyond Borders conference, and annual spring fundraiser.
Assist on event related marketing and communication activities.
Solicit donors and sponsors for department events and activities.
Seek community‑based organizations that can become partners in delivering our program of activities.
Plan Parent University event series for family engagement.
Assist in planning other multilingual events such as the Back to School Fair, Make it Happen Senior Celebration, and others.
Contribute to problem solving and strategy by thinking through complex circumstances and assisting stakeholders in finding inclusive solutions.
Benefits
Stipend of $957.46 bi‑weekly throughout the 12‑month term.
Choice of $7,395.00 education award or cash stipend upon completion of service.
Education award can be used to pay off qualified loans or for educational expenses.
Forbearance of federally qualified student loans during service term (interest paid).
Healthcare benefits.
20 days of sick and vacation leave.
