Overview Commercialization Manager role located in the Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) within the Division of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Responsibilities

Evaluate research technologies and innovation in computer, software, data analysis, digital health, engineering, chemical, or biological science industries.

Educate faculty and manage disclosure, protection (patent, copyright, software, or tangible property), and development of strategic marketing plans.

Coordinate patent prosecution, marketing plans, and draft/negotiation of intellectual‑property related contracts.

Build faculty relationships, make investment decisions, and develop commercialization strategies in coordination with related offices and stakeholders.

Qualifications and Competencies

Experience working in university commercialization evaluating invention disclosures, marketing technologies, and negotiating license agreements.

A clear understanding of intellectual property management, including patents and copyright.

Ability to understand a wide range of science and technology within the computer, engineering, chemical, or biological science industries.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and set priorities with minimal supervision.

Ability to manage many projects and relationships simultaneously across a broad range of innovations and markets.

Strong team‑oriented focus, excellent oral and written communication, and strong project‑management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience drafting and negotiating license agreements.

Education and Experience Relevant post‑baccalaureate degree required (or foreign equivalent). Minimum 3 years of experience in technology transfer, managing the flow of research innovation, disclosures, patents, trademarks, copyrights, and other aspects of technology commercialization.
