Purpose

Church World Service (CWS) is seeking a visionary, mission-driven, collaborative leader and fundraising expert to serve as Deputy Chief, Advancement.

The Deputy Chief, Advancement is responsible for strategic leadership and oversight of CWS' fundraising, communications, and marketing efforts, designed to advance CWS' mission and sustainability. The role spearheads and leads CWS' revenue generation strategy and oversees its implementation through cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

Strategic leadership and oversight for an integrated Advancement team comprised of fundraising, marketing, and communications to drive revenue growth, mission visibility and donor engagement. Lead cross-functional collaboration to deliver cohesive campaigns, uphold CWS' vision, mission, and values, and promote a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability across the team and organization. In partnership with communications, marketing, and fundraising leadership, develop and drive implementation of organizational Advancement Strategy, comprised of: Revenue Generation Strategy and Plan Communications and Marketing Strategy and Plan. Ensure that CWS' Advancement Strategy effectively engages and grows both of CWS' key constituencies - church/faith-based, and humanitarian/development-focused. Directly engage existing and new donors and funding partners to expand CWS' reach and impact. Actively seek new potential donors (individual, CSR, and philanthropic/institutional). Develop and monitor the external presentation of CWS' mission and impact. Create and lead the Advancement and Communications Hub as a vehicle for inter-departmental collaboration, alignment, and oversight of CWS' fundraising, communications, and marketing efforts. In consultation with the Senior Directors of Fundraising, and Senior Director of Program Development and Impact, identify and implement effective fundraising work plans, staffing structures, and resource allocations. In consultation with the Director of Communications and Marketing and Senior Director of External Affairs, identify and implement effective communications and marketing work plans, staffing structures, and resource allocations. Report to the Chief Strategy Officer, with a dotted reporting line to the Chief Operations Officer. Travel regularly - up to 50% of the time. Participates in Senior Leadership Team (SLT) Undertake other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required; advanced degree preferred. 10-15+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, including a minimum of 8-10 years management or senior leadership experience. Substantive experience with strategic planning and execution, including experience directing a unified organizational advancement strategy encompassing fundraising, marketing, and communications. Proven success building sustainable funding portfolios for mission-oriented organizations, preferably related to human rights, international development, refugee assistance/protection, or other social justice causes. Ability and comfort to work across faith-based, humanitarian, and advocacy spaces. Strong understanding of the connections between fundraising, programs, and advocacy. Demonstrated ability to manage a multi-disciplinary team, balancing strategy and execution. Experience with matrix management, and ability to lead and influence across different positions and levels of an organization. Strong project management skills and the ability to juggle multiple competing priorities. Excellent writing, editing, and interpersonal communication skills.
